Have any UK members had their power steering box rebuilt? If so, can you recommend anyone for the job?

As per RealOEM, the box is the same as that on the E3 so a replacement might be an option. Mine works well but not as well as it could, and centres very slowly.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Friend of mine Kos has a mint 635 that highly recommends a company but the name escapes me. They rebuilt his box, should be able to do the E9 boxes too, i'll grab the info off him.

I had mine done by Steering Specialists in Wakefield.

They dont have a website but can be contacted on 01924 267999

They turned it around really quickly for a cost of £250 inc - happy to recommend

Hi Christopher

That sounds really interesting. My restorers have been quoted £600 + by a firm in Preston!
Thanks for the info - I'll discuss this with them and let you know.

Cheers.

Thanks for all the advice and pointers. My box is loose in the centre position and just either side of it and stiffer at the extremes. It is still quite easy to move, has no leaks and there is no play although the light feeling in the centre is disconcerting. I am told by an experienced BMW guy that as one would expect, the play over time comes from wear in the most used which is in the middle due to wear on the worm gear. Tightening too much can cause seizure at the extremes and no amount of seal replacement will improve the wear on the gear.

So - time to look for a new component of the box, which seems to be identical to that used on an E24 (although the box itself isn't) or a NOS box or one with less mileage than mine.

In the meantime, if anyone knows about where either of these unicorns might be lurking, please let me know.
