Hi!

Steering has worked fine the last year after restoration. But lately the steering has become heavier. At first I thought it was the high pressure pump so I overhauled it, but nothing changed after reassembly. I thought that it might be little or no oil in the steering gear (I've never checked it) that is the problem. I only find a drain plug and not fill plug. Anybody have an idea how to fill the oil.

I think the steering box is separated in two separate compartments. One is the hydraulic part, boosted by the hydraulic high pressure steering pump, and the other part is the mechanical steering unit. The last is lubricated by 440 cm3 hypoid transmission oil SAE 90.
This is the oil that I´m going to check and replace.
Or is there something I have missed here??

first time i hear about this, please tell me more !!!!

Henrik, What makes you think there are separate compartments with different types of oil? There is no mention of that anywhere in the factory manuals that I can find.

The technical drawing shows two separate compartments, but when looking into details there seems to be a supply and return channel from the power steering part to the mechanical steering unit with worm wheel and piston. So the lubrication in the mechanical part may be taken care of by the power steering ATF oil. But why is it specified SAE 90? Is it a mix of power steering and manual steering box data that makes this unclear?

Henrik, that specification page is for the Gemmer steering box which is the purely mechanical, non-hydraulic assisted, box.
