Steering column trim panel help

When I bought my E9, the trim panel under the steering column was only held in place by the wires plugged into the switches in it and the trip odometer reset cable. Needless to say this wasn't the most stable of mounting methods.

I've looked in the blue book and searched here, but haven't found exactly what I need. Usually it just says "remove trim panel." Since it was basically already removed when I got it I'm having a hard time reversing the process.

The foam was separating from the metal backing at the rear of the trim panel so I removed it and reglued with 3M Yellow Weather Strip Adhesive. (Worked like a charm - thanks forum tipsters!) Now I'm ready to reinstall it but I can't quite figure out the proper mounting points.

Could someone snap some pics of where its mounting points are (especially if you have relatively clean wiring under the dash)?

Also take a look at the posted pics and tell me if they look right. I believe the long piece at the rear should attach to the firewall somewhere. If this is the case should it be straight(er)?

Thanks,
Dan

From the top of my head, i think the small black brackets serve as mounting points. 2 are on the side adjacent to the center console. those screw into the black vinyl covered wood panel of the center console.
In the rear (not sure) attaches to the firewall, the steering column or a bracket on either of them.

You have the clips in the right places so they are your guides.

Frankly, the one on the bottom right in your picture, well how do you get there, probably attaches from inside the center dash side panels. I left that since the lip that slides below the steering column covers that area. As Erik said, the other to the side panel, the one on the end where you have no vinyl cover ( and you should), get upside down and you'll see the place/hole it attaches to where the steering column almost exits the firewall.

I believe the swivel for the fuse door on the left crosses a bracket off the dash below the grab bar and is also used. May have to get some speed nuts and improvise.

Thanks for your help everyone. I particularly like "No one seems to know what this one is for." That could be the motto for many things under my dash, especially mystery wires.

I'll look a little harder back at the firewall to find the rear attachment point. That's the one that was the most mysterious to me.

Attached should explain it why I made that statement. I too hope someone will explain it someday. Maybe to retain the switch wires? Post your mystery wires pics as those will probably be solved.
