hi

probably you had not dedicated a little time to this small black cylindric box next to the brake fluid reservoir

well, ...and there is a filter inside !

so, be good, open it and change the filter, for god´s sake !

I've not seen the filter in reality, but according to pics so could it be a washable filter?
Just a thought.

I am about to tear down the power steering unit due to a leak in the intermediate section.
I've just ordered new seals for the unit and I feel a bit worried regarding the job when I read about it in the blue book....

So when that is done I will change (or wash) the steering fluid filter before refill.

I noticed you used BMW ATF D2 oil. Recommendation or experience?

Regards
Stefan

now remove the old fluid:
here is a schematic explanation of the most important parts of the system: reservoir, pump, mechanism

you will need to remove the lower hose of the pump, and the cap that is placed in the mechanism too

250920073526.jpg

run the car first to warm the fluid

the two bolts that you have to remove are 17mm Hexagonal

system capacity 1200 ml

240920073515.jpg

the hexagonal headed cap can (hardly) be seen here, count on a 12mm copper washer

.

.
240920073518.jpg

reconnect the hose, plug the cap, install the filter and plate, fill the reservoir, and start the engine, stop, refill, with the engine on move the steering from side to side, refill, close and drive the car some km, stop, refill

the steering runs smooth now and noise has been dramatically reduced

nice

Great!
I have now taking the power steering apart.

Puuh...

Well to start with the filter deQuincey. I'm not sure if the new filter is stiff like a "h#rd on" like the original ??

What a weird original filter!! Looks like some kind of nature filter made of bakelite!!! Weird!

Would you like to know how to take the powersteering unit apart??

I don't know if I will make it all the way.

Reviving this old thread if this question can be answered - when returning the threaded connections to the PSP, should I use Teflon tape on the threads to ensure a seal?

(Very useful thread for those needing to repair/replace their PSP).

there is no need and the teflon will do nothing,
as you can see in the pictures the tube end is flared, so the nut is only pushing, no seal action on that nut

Resurrecting this old thread....so, a few questions:
1. The new filter is just placed on the bottom of the reservoir with the metal "cap" and spring holding it in place, correct?
2. How is the triangular clip held in place, is there a notch on the bolt or does it latch onto one of the threads on the bolt?
3. Does the spring ever have to be replaced? I will assume over decades that it loses some of its tension.
4. What solution/chemical bath is used to clean the components? Gasoline? Other?

Thanks for the great information!

1. The order is bolt, filter, cover plate, spring, triangular threaded piece.
2. It screws onto the bolt which hooks onto the housing under the filter.
3. Not that I have ever seen, it has quite a bit of tension and requires pressing down on it and turning the triangle to get it far enough down the bolt.
4. If it is out of the car, just some soap and water, if it's still in the car just wipe it down dry and free of residue.
5. Fluid is regular Dextron/Mercon, nothing fancy.

My experience was that pressing the spring separately from screwing down the triangle piece made it much easier to get the triangle properly installed. Without the downward pressure on the spring, the triangle would merely spin in place.

@Ohmess ...after contacting the spring with the clip, the sledding got a bit more difficult. I did what you suggested and it's all in place now. The bolt shaft didn't have a washer so I put that in place before installing the clip. All is good.

I used CHF 202 PS fluid. Thanks for the guidance. Rather ask dumb questions than be sorry I didn't...
