Sticky brake pedal

Took my E3 for a short ride today and I noticed right away from start that something was off with the brakes. The brake pedal seemed to be sticking in the top position so I had to press harder than usual for the first part of the pedal travel. And when it was past that point, the brakes engaged abruptly. Not so hard that it locked the brakes but it became an unpleasant experience.
Sometimes the pedal rised slowly to its upper position by itself when released, other times I had to put my foot under and help it back up.
I have a few suspects. The old NOS master brake cylinder, the rebuilt rear brake calipers or the brake booster. The booster is the only part of brake system that I haven’t replaced.
Anyone experienced similar problems?
 
Have you examined your braking system lately? Bled the brakes? Checked for proper caliper operation? How old are your flexible brake hoses? Does your vehicle track in a straight line when braking? Your symptoms might be due to a component not releasing properly, such as a caliper, or the master cylinder, or even a flex hose that is is showing its age. While brake power boosters/brake servos are long lived and ordinarily trouble-free, nothing lasts forever.

As noted by stphers, the issue could also be as simple as lack of lubrication or a failed pedal bushing. Although a "limp" pedal is often associated with a missing or broken pedal return spring, you might still examine yours to ensure against something near the pedal assembly that might cause binding.

I would say it tracks pretty much straight forwards when braking.
All lines and hoses new last year.
Brakes worked fine last time I drove the car. But I do remember that they might have been similar in behavior the very first time I stepped on the pedal right after startup.
The car has been sitting in the garage for a month at least since then and now.
