The release button on the stowage compartment lid of my 1970 2800cs is broken and I am forced to use duct tape to keep lid closed.. Anybody repaired the mechanism or have an acceptable replacement? This is the compartment to the left of the steering wheel.

Have you looked at the metal "box" that the hook on the back of the release button catches into? If that is misaligned, the hook won't catch and the lid will not stay closed. There are a couple of screws that hold the metal "box" in place; the top of the box is slotted allowing for some adjustment.

As to the button itself, its very simple. Does the hook move backward about 25 degrees when you push it in, and return to a relatively straight position when you release the button? If so, this is operating correctly.

Try searching VW Locks. Also please send me a photo of the lock out of th cover.
Thanks

Unique, one off, springs can be made by spring companies relatively simple. I used that service for my own company. For about 40 euro I had 1 unique spring.
IF you have no other solutions, then this could possibly be an option?

you might want to ask if anybody with parts cars or spare interior parts has the button / latch to sell. the '74 had twist knob, all of the early cars had a push button.

....I am confused. What are we talking about, and what does he need? What is a stowage compartment: the trunk, the glove box, the fuse compartment?
A picture would be very helpful!
