I want to clean the tail light reflectors & put in some brighter bulbs. I removed the two knurled nuts, but that is far as I got. The housing won't budge. Is there something else that is holding the housing so securely? TIA

I suspect it is stuck due to time and temperature (it has been a while since I pulled mine off. Check to make sure that the finishing upholstered panel is not touching the housing to prevent it from moving, as long as the housing is clear you can keep wiggling it to break the tension on the seal.

Well, I finally got the driver side housing "released!" The other one came out easily. I noticed on the metal reflectors the finish wore off. I applied silver mylar-type tape to them. The silvery plastic reflectors were in decent condition. I had planned to get brighter bulbs, but found I got the biggest improvement of brightness just by cleaning off some very fine dust on the bulbs.

You might also consider placing he build with red LED bulbs for much more brightness.
There was a part number listed somewhere on tis forum but I search and was unable to find.
Perhaps someone else remembers the part number...

I would not use brighter LEDs because it would be admitting that the world is a much darker place than in 1972...Refurbishing the reflectors is a great idea, one day I may get to that.

For a real big difference; try getting your reflectors pvd (physical vapour deposition; in a vacuum) coated. It is a technique to get these mirror-like coatings on just about any (automotive ) parts.
Isn't cheap at about 100 euro per lens here in Germany.

Its just cool te read even:
