I need to recover the front seats on my coupe.

Looked at World and GAHH and they have nothing that matches the original tan pigskin?

Anyone have any luck sourcing through suppliers or upholsterer?

Thanks

Bez,

you are correct, they don't come close to matching. the GAHH colors are terrible, but the leather is nicer than World. World's color was better, but the leather is just ok as the color is. unfortunately KHM doesn't have seat kits for the e9.

its tough ...

Pigskin leather

Aside from the color, does anyone know where to source that perforated pigskin leather? I can then have it dyed to match.

Thanks

piggies, piggies, lots of piggies...

You might try a company call Wolverine Worldwide...the are a huge company that started out making work gloves, and make shoes, etc, and also sell hides for furniture, etc. I was under the impression that the "perf" is the void where hair once was, but I could be wrong. I know that the hides are smaller, as pigs are smaller than cows, but you are not covering a Chesterfield, and car seats are relatively small pieces...I toured their factory near Grand Rapids, MI, but that was when I was in design school, a few decades ago. They were all about quality then, and I think they still are. I took a quick look at their website, and they may be of help; but I'm not sure about retail distribution/etc. Good luck, I hope it works out for you.

Pigskin

Thanks Dave

I am no leather expert but I believe that the original leather is pigskin and that the small depressions/holes are remnants of the hair follicles. The holes are only seen on one side and do not go all the way through the skin unlike mechanical perforations made by a machine.

Pigskin?

The holes were not perforations made mechanically. Looks like pigskin to me.

Anyone out there know what type of leather was used?

Thanks

Houndstooth

Curious. Has anyone ever seen houndstooth fabric used inside of a coupe? Am I completely lack of taste? Don't answer that. Just the first question. ;)

I saw a gorgeous 911 the other day that was this emerald green with black leather interior that had a beautiful black/white houndstooth.

Yes... Pigskin leather was used for the 2800CS. Traditional calf leather was introduced at the beginning of production for the 3.0CS I believe. Practically all original 2800s had the "follicle dimpled" pigskin hides.

Bert,

I trust what you are saying but why can't I find that in the orange parts books? They have cloth, velour, leather and imitation leather/skye. No mention of pig vs. calf. The Blumax still had original black leather on the rear seats and I never noticed hair follicle holes.

the removal of the hair from the hide doesn't always result in seeing the pores in the finished leather. it depends on the finishing of the hide after tanning as to what you see. it also depends if the leather is full grain or top grain. often, the exposed texture of leather is embossed to give you the texture that you see. different parts of a given hide can naturally have a different texture

the texture can be large, medium or small ... it can be heavy, light or smooth. the finish can have a sheen or a satin or flat finish.

i don't think calf skin was really used on the e9 ... the hides average 15 sf, and don't forget that that includes the unusable leg portions of the hide. calfskin is very soft + supple. calfskin is also a whole different pricepoint than your nice cowhide leather. whether or not they used pigskin is an unknown to me. my comment is don't confuse the presence of texture as pigskin ... just as don't correlate smooth with calfskin.

Chris, sorry I don't have any printed info to back up my beliefs. It's purely based on my casual observations throughout the years of studying various 2800cs interiors. Also, by reading various old publications on the 2800 coupes, many of these articles do referred to the unique texture of the pigskin hides. Cowhide leather was indeed used and not calf leather as I had mistakenly mentioned.

Most 2800CS leather interiors that I've seen do look like the pic as provided by Bez.

you might want to show the back side of the hide. does it really look different than cowhide?

Backside of leather

As you can see, the holes do not perforate the entire thickness of the hide

We have recently had a set of seats reupholstered using the kits from GAHH. The color does not match what the client desired, and we knew that going in, and chose to redye the seats vs. going with custom dyed leather and needing to fabricate every piece from raw stock.
This path was chosen after a conversation with Leatherique and GAHH to determine if a redye would be effective for long term color retention and a high quality result.

That said, we have yet to do the redye, but a few sample test pieces did give us the desired color.

YMMV ;-)

Embossed cowhide

Lederhaus in Duisburg, Germany says the leather is embossed cowhide. I sent them a sample but they were not able to provide the same pattern as the original tan leather
