Many people buying these options are betting they will be worth > $1,000 by the time the cars become available. If not, the $1,000 is refundable according to the article Nicad cites. So I'm skeptical that the demand for these options bears any relationship to the actual demand for the car.

I get the model S, but the X seems an odd choice for the top model. Those doors don't work in ski country. No roof box and what do you do when covered in snow?
