In my book, I talk about how the E9 was painted in 1988 by Giovanni's BMW Auto Body. 25 years later, the car has some rust pinholes just starting, so I called Giovanni's. I learned that Giovanni has retired, but his son (also named Giovanni) has taken over the business. When I pulled in, five shirtless tattooed men ogled the car. Then I said "Giovanni's dad painted this 25 years ago" and their jaws dropped. There, in the back of the shop, was his dad's red tii and slant-nose 911 conversion I remembered from 1988. His son said he does mostly insurance work these days, not classics, but can certainly handle a few pinholes, would be honored to touch it up, and gave me a very reasonable price. Very cool.
