I leave way too early Weds AM to go down to collect my Coupe that has been at SFDon's for... 6 years now. Since Oct 2017....

It went down to basically be turned into a hot rod.
The original 2.8L carb'd engine was toast, so Don put together an M90 with Megasquirt for me.
The 4 speed trans was shifting ok - but leaked like a sieve and... who knows what was going on inside - but the PO provided me a Getrag 5-speed when I bought the car.
The AC as installed was non-functional, so I was going to have Don get that going....
And, I was also having the brakes updated to the later E9 setup. I had the trailing arms as well (from the PO).
Basically - I wanted to keep the body and interior mostly 'as is' while jazzing up the running gear and taking care of the mechanical stuff. Basically make it a bit of a hot rod. :)
Once Don gets into it and starts to uncover 'things' - I get the call (actually MANY calls - LOL) - Rust. And more rust. Guess I shouldn't have asked him to do the AC (with then needing to remove the dash)... LOL
So what started out as the intent to have a hot rod with a 20 foot paint job (and nominal expense) became a 'full meal deal' resulting in a car that will look as good as it goes.
The 6 year part of this is a combination of circumstances... on both ends (Don's and mine - and COVID) and in the end worked out as well for both of us.

I have an enclosed car trailer - so, for the trip north, the Coupe will be out of the nasty weather that we are having on the west coast right now...
Since I was going to go down anyway - I'll be taking down my E23 to Don for some 'fine tuning'. When it's finished - I'll fly down and drive it north - when it works out to do so.
The car is a German market 1985 E23 728i (with 5-speed) and AC and all the expected comforts (at least as they were 40 years ago - LOL). It is fun to drive as you just don't see too many E23's on the road any longer - and it gets attention whenever I do. And with all the BS we see on the BaT listing for the CSL, this is a success story as this is a car I found on that site - and bid - but didn't get it.
A few weeks later, the winning bidder contacts me to see if I was still interested in the car as he was going to do something else.

So - we made a deal and two weeks later, the car arrived from Boston.
Now - just to get it working as good as the Coupe is. LOL

Stay tuned for the rest...

I had a German market E23, 1981 735i. It was an amazing car - still miss it.
Congrats on the 7 and the hot rod coupe!

I had a German E23 730. Could only enjoy it down the driveway on the farm. SO rusty, but it did yield many significant bits : triple Italian Webers, Getrag 265/6, Stahl headers, LSD, and several unique-to-E23 goodies. Parted it and wish I had found it 10 years earlier, before rust got so bad. But many of us can say that about alot of cars!IMG_2091.jpeg

I'm back home now.
The E23 is with Don and I am beat.
Day 1- Everett, WA to Williams, CA
Day 2 - Williams to Don... Swap cars. Drive north to Yreka, CA.
Day 3 - Yreka to Everett.

I have made this drive many times driving all sorts of cars.....
Mercedes, BMW, Ford, GMC... Often drive go the entire way to Monterey (where I am from) in one day. ~950 miles door to door.
But - Driving my F250 with a wonky fuel gauge... and towing a 28' enclosed trailer (with a decent amount of added weight) - NOT a relaxing or fast paced drive.
I stopped basically every 140-170 miles to fuel up (and take a short breather). The fuel gauge in the truck has started not working, so I just played it real safe and went far enough to what I thought would be a 1/2 full tank. I was pretty good at estimating that (that's what I get for having that truck for 18 years - LOL).

More info to follow later - Time to rest...
(The car arrived fine - and so did the truck and the trailer - :) )

So - Here are the details on the car that I just picked up from @sfdon after being in restoration for 6 years (ok, 5 years, 11 months and a few days - LOL).
It is a BMW 2800CS that I purchased back in 2008.
While it looked 'ok' - it had what I call a 20' paint job. It looked pretty good from 20' but any closer and... you'd start to see some serious issues.
The engine was 'ok' as well - but overheated at the drop of a hat and the transmission crunched when going into 2nd gear and... was a 4 speed (oh- did I mention it leaked like crazy?)
The rest of the car was a nice driver quality... not great, but considering what I paid for it - I was very happy.
Well.... Back in 2017, the engine issues finally got the best of me and I arranged to have Don install an M90 with Megasquirt - along with a 5-sped trans I already had.
That and.... beefier brakes, fix a few suspension things, clean up the dash and get the A/C fixed and ... so on and so on. :)
Well, long story short... To fix the A/C, the dash had to be removed. In so doing, rust was discovered. That and the other things the folks doing the restoration found that 'should' be fixed had me give the green light to a 'full meal deal' restoration (so to speak).
Those that know Don... this is how the day unfolded when the rust was discovered.....
~10am - Don calls me to say they are removing the dash and found some rust. Concerning, but not crossed the line to having any other impacts.
~Noon - Don text me that the dash is almost out and more rust found. Still not 'crossed the line'
~3pm - I get a two word text. "You're F*&^ED" LOL
So... Now instead of a 'below the radar' car with a bit of HP under the hood, it is a 100 point concourse worthy car that I will sweat like crazy every time I drive it - LOL....
Kind of like the Mustang I have in that regard. But drives a whole lot better.
Still - I am glad I did it. And more glad it is finally home.
See pics below.....

On a side note, I have been collecting parts off and on since I got the car.
One of them is a new toolbox (that I got when BMW started making them again - several years ago).
One of the other is a new (to me) coolant expansion tank. I bought one from Murray Fowler (Bluemax) and had Don fix it up and install in place of the original one I had. Love the brass polished look it gives the engine bay.

Don - Thanks for everything.
