So here we are: the coupe (a basic 3.0 CS) needs a top-end rebuild. The good news is that I have an experienced E9 mechanic who I trust to do the job correctly and carefully. He's working up an estimate for me as we speak.

My one question is whether anyone sells rebuilt heads and, if so, would this be a simpler and more cost-efficient way to proceed? Looking for any and all advice here.

Thanks.

My b35 head cost $490 to replace all valve guides and replace two valves plus install a new cam, what else does it need?

Rarely does a head need a new everything, until it gets tanked and checked for cracks, which cost me $50 today, it may need very little. I've done two heads in five years, both around $500.

A high quality head with good thickness and completely refreshed is worth a 1000 bucks.
Machine shops charge 500 labor and the head with fresh parts is 500.
Guides, seals, shafts and fresh rockers are expensive.
Old rockers with wear are bad news.
Fresh complete heads from the dealer are double that price.

So Larry..what happened? Is this the result of the coolant loss a couple of weeks ago?
