Jim Smith, who has since passed away, assembled an amazing prewar BMW Collection. When the fires were growing near, all the cars were quickly moved to Sonoma Raceway.

I know a bunch of these nut jobs. This sort of thing is unfortunately only a sport for the wealthy, and doing this just once can make the cost of an E9 restoration look reasonable. Fortunately, we have these friends through whom we can live vicariously. I have to admit that I do occasionally feel a bit of pity for the cars.
