This is messed up.. mail stopped to USA

Wall Street investors are buying up claims to potential tariff refunds, betting that the Supreme Court will strike down President Donald Trump’s signature economic policy and require the government to disgorge tens of billions of dollars that companies have paid this year in import taxes.
I doubt refunds will trickle down to small retail transactions, and if they do the processing fees will negate them.
Perhaps the SC court will declare them illegal going forward but not prescribe a retroactive process.

I hope and I trust the system to work, this will go down in history as a colossal mistake…

Interesting how these "investors" see opportunity long before most of us. Fifteen years ago the Princeton University Endowment started up buying water rights in the South West. When you are talking about an essential finite resource the value can only go up.

Check if your local municipal water department hasn't been bought by a private company. And then the rates go you know where.

The word from Hong Kong yesterday-

“only documents are allowed to be sent to the US from HK.” via mail…

Bad, but not impactful as I do not recall buying a single item for my E9 from HK in 20 years of ownership :).

for anybody that isn't friends on FB with @Mario L., i am copying his post here (i removed the small section on costs passed on to customers as its not germane to this thread)

TARIFFS one small business's experience
As most of you know I own a business that services and restores German cars. We import many parts from various suppliers from all over the world. In most cases shipping has been handled by UPS. Tariff charges are also administered and collected by UPS.

Recently we purchased 6 engine pistons from Germany that were not available through any USA supplier. We paid $2000 for the pistons with shipping, and received a $2200 tariff charge. Today I received an email from UPS on another tariff charge on 2 sunroof cables for a 1974 car that we paid $440.00 USD for. These came from Australia, which is supposed to be at a 15% tariff rate. We have been charged $854.00 .

Text below is a copy of the UPS email I received this AM.

In both cases we made our clients aware of the possibility of tariff charges before placing the orders.

According to what we are all hear on the news or read . . .

The tariffs on car parts for cars 25 years old do not apply.
For this there is a code and text that has been added to every package as per the government guidelines, shown below.
ALL SPARE PARTS LISTED IN
THIS INVOICE ARE FOR BMW
VINTAGE CARS MORE THAN 25
YEARS OLD
Customs code for all positions
87089997

Newer car parts are charged at 15% -25% depending on country of origin.

To all of you in similar businesses, buy your goods cautiously. Find a different shipping method than UPS.

As a favor I loaned djet diagnostic parts to a shop in Hong Kong- and now have to pay for courier service to return them.

If the part is US made then you pay no taxes but need to fill a form:

If the returning part is not US made then the HK party should pay the courier I think.

And the battle begins….

Hi Don,

In contact with local customs and answered all their questions, that the part isn't an "ANTIQUE" but a functioning 50 year old car part, its material composition of aluminum copper and plastic and purpose of engine management.

Now they want to talk to you directly. May I have an email of yours to provide to them? Sorry for the problems and delay. ”
