Tranny

No....That is a 280 Gearbox without a speedo drive mated to the m88/3... not a bolt in option
Find a 265/6 instead with the correct 85' bell housing for the Motronic sensors

Okay, I assumed you were asking if the Trans mated to the engine in the pic. I'll pose these as questions since I'm no expert.

1. Is your friend in Europe? I (like Alan) assumed that the engine is an s38, which came in the US M5/M6. It is based on the M88 block.
2. I assume the Trans is a G280, but it basically looks the same as a G265
3. Do we no have members on here with a G265/6 bolted to an M90, replacing the close ratio dogleg? If so, Isn't the M90 block based on the M88? If so, why wouldn't a G280 bolt up to an M30?

The g280 is a special transmission. It is close ratio like the dogleg but it has a standard shift pattern. They are expensive to buy and extremely expensive to rebuild. Several folks on here have e28 M5's. Perhaps they can chime in...

Supposedly this comes from a 1988 Euro M635. My friend who owns an independent BMW repair shop in North Austin brought this to my attention and the owner is a close friend of his. He has the entire drivetrain from the swing arms to the LSD, brakes, exhaust, motor, trans etc. He asked me if I were interested in it and I'm not sure there is any real value in all that stuff. Other forum members have said "not what you're looking for" which I trust, I just thought there may be some value in picking the stuff up for a future possible radical build?? :-)

Based on the letters it looks like an M88 motor. They are badass - if you can get it cheap buy it.

The quick way to tell it's not a G265 is the bell housing is not removable.

This thread is really informative. I did some google image comparisons and it looks like most of the s38's had BMW spelled out on the valve cover, and a different oil cap configuration.

I would think that if you got those parts for the right price it would make a great swap. Restomod Bavaria comes to mind!

Thanks, I think the owner was going to do a swap into another car and for some reason has decided not to so I think he will let it go very reasonably- I won't know until I meet with him on Friday. I have seen a motor similar to this in an e9 before and driven it, it was very powerful and fun. Unfortunately the e9 in question had so much rust throughout I thought it was literally going to twist in half but it was still fun to drive :-)
