Just buttoning the engine back up. When I took the timing chain tensioner spring and piston out last week I was expecting a small ball bearing to fall out. Nothing came out. Just checking on this as I am rebuilding, turns out my memory was correct and there should have been a 5mm ball bearing in the piston, part 07119986250. I checked on realoem.
Just checking I'm not going mad!
On my 1981 E24 there was definitely this ball inside the piston (I remember dropping it!), and pumping the piston (via the tensioner rail) bled and firmed up the tensioner. I assume my 1972 E9 should also have this same design?

99% sure the ball was not there when I took the tensioner out, as I was expecting it, and was looking out for it.

Assuming this part was simply missed on an earlier rebuild, would I not have had tensioner noise, as the only tension on the chain would have been the long spring?

Anyone else come across this?

After cleaning the piston, shake it, you should hear it rattle. I’ve bought replacements before and they’ve always come pre assembled with the ball bearing. It wasn’t something I had to reassemble.

Thanks for the response, yes it looks like they come in two sorts (or my memory is no good )
I have popped it back in and primed it and the tensioner rail firmed up up nicely

Cheers
