Hi all,

So I decided to strip, polish and re anodize all the Alloy trim on the car, picked it all up today and as it turns out it's come back rubbish, it's just not good enough to go on the car, it will bug me every time I look at it.
So just priced up on Peske Parts, looking at $2000 US plus shipping to New Zealand.
Will price up next week from a local dealer to see what price they can do.
In the mean time any other ideas?Refinishing? Painting ????

Thanks in advance

Steve

there is a shop in California who will polish and ceramic coat.
this was done for my coupe and the result is stunning.

MAybe anodizing was the wrong thing...

Dont know how good it is but Bavauto.com sells a kit, I see it in the catalog they mail out. Im sure you can find it online if you search their site.
oxidized aluminum kit 07500100002.

Alum trim polish...

Discussed several years ago...
When I got to the point where we repainted the car, we went around and around on what to do..Several folks here had had bad experiences with strip, polish, and re-anodize. Other option was to coat with clear coat of some manor...worries about yellowing...I don't remember ceramic-coat as an option then. So I chemically stripped the anodizing (plastic-lined cardboard box with chemicals and warm water), had a young man that polished parts for custom motorcycles do his magic, and then waxed with real carnuba wax...very little cost, and easy to re-polish with Mother's (brand) aluminum polish and re-wax...(which I have yet to have to do in 8 or so years). I need to mention that the car doesn't sit and bake in the sun or sit out in the acid-rain elements to need re-polish...just another application of wax a couple of times.
Sorry to hear of your bad experience.

Mmmm, hindsight is always a great thing, yes the trim looked nice in its raw polished state, I had read somewhere that some people had left theirs polished and waxed, but I really didn't want to leave mine like this as I thought it would re oxidize etc etc.

So after 2 days thinking about it I'm now at the following point...

The 2 x large alloy plate trims inside the back of the door openings I am going to paint the colour of the car, I'm just not prepared to spend $660 US on these 2 items alone at the moment, I will also paint the 2 x flat bits of trim that go between the body and the window gasket moulding for for the upper / rear area of the rear side windows as after installed not much of them is really seen anyway.
For the front and rear screen decorative strips and the gutter moldings, these I think I will have to bite the bullet on and by new ones.
As for the 7 pieces of belt line Trim, I have a cunning plan, we have here in NZ 2 companies that do all means of high performance decorative coatings for hot rods and the like (procoat and HPC) the both do a very good polished alloy/chrome paint like finish ----but---they both require tumble polishing after painting, but the guy tells me the thin moldings won't cope with this so he wont do them, So, not one to be put off, tomorrow I am going to approach him again to see if I can make some sort of jig to bolt these onto for the tumble polishing process.... Watch this space, the kidney grill and headlight grill alloys I will leave as they are, as I think with the protruding overhanging nose of the car they are not really right in your face and I think I will get away with the "not so good" finish.
At the end of the day it will also come down to the cost of the painting process, so it may still not be a realistic option working out not much cheaper than new.

Ha Ha :)

Just had a quote from local dealer for 1 x LH front belt line trim $421!!

so of to Penske parts we go unless any of you guys can recommend anyone that's going to be cheaper?

My only concern is the freight of these to NZ without getting bent and damaged

I had mine polished several years ago @ $8 a foot. The company didn't offer clear coating service or other method of protection. They said if its a garaged summer car just put wax on them on occasion and that the moldings should stay bright and shiny.

Needless to say didn't work, they dulled out !

What is a complete set of new moldings sell for these days ?

without going and looking up prices, belt line trim averages out at about $140-$160 a piece, so about $1000-$1100 ish USD, if you say it quickly it dosent hurt to much :)

Pretty much what I did except I used 'Flitz' polish before reinstalling. That was eight plus years ago and it still looks great but my car is garaged and only driven on nice days.

Reinstalling the trim took some time and patience. There are a couple of bolts/nuts on the rear pieces (one way up inside the trunk and one behind the power window motor) that are a real challenge. Just like the dash, I don't know if I would want to do it again.

I had Dan at Speedway do Rahal's trim (window moldings, belt trim molding, both pieces at the door sill, the CSL fender flares, and both striker plate covers for right around $1200. Might not do that again, especially if the parts are available new.

i have had great luck with Lisa. all of my orders were shipped correctly. easy to work with too.
on another note, i just got the rear belt trim pieces from a local dealer for $140 a piece ... thanks to a fellow e9 member who has a good connection with the parts man at the local dealer.
