True CSL wheelarch chrome

@bert35csi,

I would be hoping if you could search your personal archive, and repost the picture of the "true" CSL wheel arch profile. (the above pic in post #10 is missing).
I'm curious and wanting to be able to distinguish one from the other.

Don’t remember what the original pics were, so here are some closeup of the original CSL wheel arches. HTH.

Thanks Bert!

Triggered by TFerrer I also found the thread describing the width measurement; 47mm for originals and 54,5mm for reproductions.

Here are the findings from the other post from @Paul Baker with the clarifying pics which clearly shows the difference.

The new trims are much deeper/wider (approx 7.5 mm) than the originals so when they are fitted they actually sit above the natural swage line in the quarter/fender which is shown by the marked colour lines on the masking tape. When fitted in the correct positions in line with the swage on the panel one end will sit too low as it is longer around the circumference, it is hard to show this in the photos.
The vertical face (image 18) of the trims are also different as the original is fairly square but the new ones are more rounded, again hard to show with a picture. This would be acceptable if they fitted perfectly out of the packet.

I am led to believe that the new trims are stainless steel (I want to confirm the grade of this with BMW or by testing) so they could be trimmed to suit a vehicle but i felt it was worth sharing my findings as buyers may be expecting an instant and easy fit.

Not only are the profiles quite different, CSL wheel arches are stainless steel, not chromed. Good luck finding originals.

Though it was a homologation item to clear larger wheels, BMW inadvertently started a styling trend that lasted more than a decade.
For awhile it seemed like every Mercedes on the planet sported extra bling, but those (and most other repop arches) are chromed brass.

EDIT: Posted almost exactly when Tyson did, proverbial picture is worth a, well, you know.

@tferrer, post pics from your car, those are genuine. Plus you have that spare to show both sides.

At the time Paul Baker posted the width differences, there was also a discussion regarding the carb CSL arches vs the later ones. Are the carb CSL arches chromed brass? The 2275xxx once are most definitely all polished stainless steel.

Oh gosh don’t send me down another carb CSL rabbit hole! :D

Yes, I do have that spare!

Here are a couple pics of the original stainless fender flares on my car. Originals are 47mm, with the square(ish) profile which you can see in the 2nd picture.

The spare one @CSL177 mentioned. I thought these would be heavier but they are thin, light and very rigid stainless steel. No stamps or stickers (Russ - you must have purchased this used somewhere) but it's in good shape.

I've yet to check which corner it matches but I think it's the front passenger because that arch has a ding in it which I remember being there from the late 80s when I owned it previously.

For posterity, a pic of the original black plates with the numbers.

Pics of the same set, showing the flat section on the side. The reflection of the red color shows the angles of the flat side. Also it shows that the square sides turn into a smooth curve at the bottom.

Here is the thread where several of us measured the trim. Another useful thread hiding in the classifieds.

That post is where I grabbed the photos in my earlier post for this thread. Definitely a confirmation that the originals are ~47mm wide across the top and the recent repops are incorrect to the tune of >7mm which is fairly substantial on something so visible...
