To get the full impact I think it would be much better to see them mounted in place along with the rear cover. Did you think about running the wires under the skin?
 
Nice idea, but I would have saved the sacred skin for down the road repairs or sold to someone else in need. It does not add any value, as a matter of fact it takes away from how they were originally designed, and I trust German BMW engineers more than I trust myself. That thinking can go a long way sometimes when making decisions like that.

And, I don't necessarily mean monetarily, I am a firm believer in trying our best to restore these 40+ year old cars to their original, off the assembly line form. As much as possible but if a couple bolt on tweeks here and there to make it your own work, then fine, as long as you keep those bolted off pieces. This seems like a waste and to me, distracts from what the function was. It just doesn't look right. And I know you put some hard work into it, but you asked our opinion, just being honest. Do what you want, even though we are all still heavily taxed, I like to say its a "free country", but its anything but.....

I applaud the execution but not a fan of the concept.
I would have cleaned and painted the plastic housing in SEM warm grey
