Trunk gas smell

I need the experts on this one. I’ve done about everything possible to eliminate gas fume smell in trunk. No luck. So far new gas tank, new sending unit and gasket. New charcoal canister in engine bay. Filler pipe was cracked so that was repaired. New rubber in fuel door, holes plugged with rubber stoppers, new gas cap rubber seal. All this and still when you open the trunk gas fumes!!! Help! Thank you
 
since you replaced the charcoal canister, what is the condition of the hose running from the canister to the 'expansion tank' in the rear fender well and then the hose from the expansion tank to the gas filler vent? next question, did you replace the rubber collar between the gas tank + filler pipe? i also presume you replaced your fuel hoses + gas filter.
 
I did not even know the charcoal canister was still available, not that I think the setup is worth much. 1+ rubber collar....and thank you Hal!

Thanks for the reply. Haven’t changed the fuel hoses yet. Also the rubber hose between filler pipe and tank was not changed either.
 
i would start with the rubber - fuel hoses are very important as they tend to dry rot from the inside out. i bought new hose from AutohausAZ - it was Continental fuel hose 8mm / 13mm. based on previous posts from @sfdon, stay away from cohline hose (i think i spelled that right). the rubber collar between the tank + filler gets hard - it might be a source of a problem, but not as much as the fuel lines. and replacing the fuel lines is a really important safety thing.

Fuel hoses are constructed from different layers. The one that I bought is labeled >FPM/ECO/AR/ECO< which means that it has four layers. They are from the inside to the outside:
  • FPM: Fluoroelastomer, a material that can handle fuels containing ethanol as well as bio-diesel, resistant to higher temperatures than NBR
  • ECO: Epichlorohydrin rubber
  • AR: Aramid protective braid
  • ECO: Epichlorohydrin rubber
Contitech makes BMW PN 13537563456, FPM marked, 8mm ID hose, which is available from RMEuropean.com for $23/meter. It has Blue wording on it.

Have ordered from both of these places, both are great, but will say that I am above impressed with AutohausAZ. They usually ship very next day and they are quick to message if there’s going to be any delay. They have become my go-to for many parts I’ve needed.

Thanks to all for your responses. I will move forward and change all the hoses.
