turn signals don't cancel

Hi all!

Bought a Nardi steering wheel on fleabay and an E9 hub from a forum member to replace a Momo wheel. Splines fit, horn works fine, but turn signals don't cancel. Noticed that the Momo wheel has a tab at the end of the hub, which I assume is the canceller. But it is integral to the Momo hub and cannot be removed . The Nardi hub is without that tab. Am I missing something from my Nardi hub, or is there a secret to making the signals cancel? Any advice would be appreciated.

the hub needs to have the canceler and you may need to remove the hum and rotate it 180 degrees so the cancelled lines up with the turn signal. I had mine in reversed. Most cars have a turn signal on th other side so I guess that is why it comes set up wrong.

I can show you when I get to your place.

Since you say that the horn works, you likely have a horn ring with a broken tab. Does the plastic around the copper ring show any evidence of a broken tab? Regardless, the ring is an easy swap, being held on by two screws (at not quite 180 degrees apart so you get the orientation correct).

The stock and Petri hubs don't have a cancel tab, they have a notch ring that activates a amall metal tab on the steering column. This is what you may need and may have been removed when the Momo was installed.

It might be part # 8 on the diagram but am not positive:

So was the sum total of those replies clear? With a Nardi hub, you need to get a stock TS cancelling thingy (= part # 8 on the diagram, as Stevehose and HB Chris wrote) and sandwich it between the top of the column and the underside of the hub. Then as Stan wrote, you need to orient it so that it is toward the cancelling finger on the switch when the wheel is straight ahead.

And, if your blinkers are on the left stalk then the #8 tab thingy should face towards the dash at 9 o'clock when you bolt the hub on, and as long as you are in there, a little lube on the plastic parts of the switch will help it operate correctly. It's the little things in life :-)

Hunt for #8 thingy

Thanks everyone. That was a great explanation, provided very rapidly. The good news is that now I know why the signals don't cancel. The next task is to find the #8 thingy that I'm missing and that apparently is NLA. Anyone have one they can spare?

I love to have the new wheel on the coupe when I drive to the Vintage next week. (If so, I'll bring the Momo in case anyone is looking for a nice 4-spoke wooden wheel). So can anyone help a fella out?

I had this one on my 2002, I am not sure it will fit but if we can verify the dimensions, I can send it to you.

Cheers,

MF

Let us know if you can't find one- I don't think the one from the 2002 will work but you could probably make one real easy. I have to pull my wheel off - hopefully tomorrow and I'll post some pictures, it's pretty thin stuff, kind of like a washer with a tab on it so one could be made pretty easily.... I think :-)

Peter,

I think mine was an aftermarket from another year/type of BMW (320?). That's why I advised to check dimensions....making one would be ideal.

Both Penske and Tomkinson list it for around $11, is this an error?

You're right Steve. Thanks!

Typical BMW. Real OEM does not show part #8 on 32/18 as available. In fact it doesn't show a part number at all on that diagram. So I assumed it was NLA. Turns out 2002's use the same cancelling cam; when you put the 2002 part number into the search box, it reveals that the same piece is used for all E9, E10, E3, E21 and E24. Once I had the part number, I found out everyone's got 'em. So Vintage, here I come...

Again, thanks to everyone for sharing your wisdom!

OK, learn something new everyday. I didn't notice the indent at the base of the Nardi hub for the stock slip ring/cancel tab/#8 thingy. But for future reference, my hub came with one similar to m73's photo where the tab is molded to the horn ring. The part number is 1.118.810.2 but this does not come up at realoem or other sites that I checked so I'm not sure what model it was originally made for. Here is a photo:

The metal canceller is press fitted onto the hub. For the pre-74 coupes, it should be rotated to the 3 o'clock position.
