on my 1973 CS there are two vacuum lines at the base of the distributor. Where are they suppose to be connected to?

The flat side of that can is retard. Line on cone side is advance. Advance must be connected to the port Below the throttle plate of the carb so it draws vacuum when opening the throttle. Our 2800 is up North but I think it is on the passenger side of the front carb, Retard comes from driver side Above the throttle plate.

ported goes to distrib advance, manifold goes to retard, but dont use retard because it wa a BS way of improving idle emissions at the expense of over heating the engine.

Wow Guys! Now I know why one of them is off. I will check and see which one is connected . This CSA I bought in June was being service by a mechanic Shop for since 1989 or so. He must have disconnect retard!
Thanks a bunch Chris , Steve, and Don for verification!!

Ported / manifold... I forgot... Which is one where suction goes up with rpm, as opposed to highest at idle?

Ported increases as roms increase (to a point) and manifold vacuum is highest at idle which is why it is used for retard. Ported take off port is located above the throttle plate (away from engine) and manifold port is located below the throttle plate (nearest engine).
