I would think the coolest thing I could do with my coupe would be to fly to Germany, meet up with my coupe, and drive on the Nurgurgring. Probably impossible, right?

It was quite the adventure. It took us 2 hours to get from Valkenburg to the Nurburgring. €30/lap for the Touristfahren Doug did 2 laps. There was a lot of traffic with us being passed by all the 20 year old hot-shoes. 3km into the second lap was what was left of a blue car that had a run in with the Armco at considerable speed & cast debris all over the track. 2km later a white car had bounced off the Armco a few times and was sin the middle of the track. After we passed the white car wreck, we had the track to ourselves!

Doug had a great 25km of race line comfort. Having fun at 7-8/10ths. On the back straight we were up to 135 mph & decelerated for the 90° turn off the track to the Club House. As we Excited the LED sign was flashing TRACK CLOSED!

We arrived back to Valkenburg in 1.5 hours.

coolest thing ? ...i don't know... did it once. Don't forget you only "know" the Ring after a "100" laps.....
Many blind turns , you just don't know were you are .
And i did it with 600 hp under my foot ... not a E9 of course.
But you can cruise it .... as busses with toerists do.

Very cool, congrats on an epic adventure.

So, I will ask the classic European track question: if you were to plan a similar adventure, which would be the best track to 'tour aggressively' while in Europe? The 'Ring, SPA, Monza or...?

Those Armco's at the Ring sure are/look close to the pavement. Looks like you'd have more 'room for error' at some other venues....

From my West Coast (US) track experiences, the tracks without walls a far less nerve wracking and more enjoyable at full gallup.

Doug's car made the cover of both the 2022 calendar and the Winter edition of the BMWCCCA magazine--congrats, but not nearly as much of an accomplishment as driving the Nurburgring at 135 MPH .

There is a long straight at the end of the lap where you can let the car rip. Otherwise, watch your mirrors for kids in e36 "Ringtools" that deflate your ego instantly. Have fun, get the sticker and get the car to the dock in one piece.

Sabine Schmitz, the Queen of the Ring, had every turn memorized by name. She did it in 10 minutes in a conversion van, scaring the bejesus out of the car show guy sitting shot gun. A great loss, too young. There is a video. What fun.

Sabine lived at the track, her parents had a restaurant & drivers would stop in. She started driving the 'Ring at 14. Unfortunately she passed away at 53. The Nurburgring is really the Sabinering.

She was a true legend.
May she rest in peace.
I have never been there , but I saw this online , it really sums her up .

great to watch. i remember when clarkson did the ring in 10 minutes in i think an xj6 jag ... and she said to him that she could do that in a van ... she came very close ... after removing Hammond and some of the seats she was within 10 seconds or so. that was cool to watch
