so here's the question, does it retract? or does it just sit in front of the a/c controls? if it retracts, how do you get it past the gear shift?

Yes it retracts manually and it does not touch the gear shift in my manual car. You tilt the screen down then push it into the radio slot, very easy, can be done with your finger. You can play the radio with the screen retracted.
