so i have a euro m30 b34 engine with a nice proper aluminum finish. its this style (but not polished or chromed)

i have been toying with the idea of doing a powder coated finish on a different valve cover. maybe black with polished or silver ribs + roundel - so this brings up a question, wrinkle or smooth? what have you seen that looked good on an injected engine? with a ceylon car, not going to go with a color other than black or silver tones. so the questions are
1. if i went with the e32 / e34 linear air filter housing, i could move the oil filler hole to the front with an original style cover ... any foreseeable issues?
2. what i don't like about the b34 type of cover are the 2 bosses that don't have anything connecting to them with the C tube intake - i could go to the e12 style

so what say my colleagues on the forum? what am i missing?

i had forgotten that there were so many versions of m30 valve covers
there is the early type with oil filler cap up front - problematic with e28 type air filter box (there is the small roundel and the bigger roundel)

the larger roundel type

the e12 type

the type used on the b34 / perhaps early b35

there is the late b35 style - too contemporary for a vintage car with C tube intake manifold IMHO

I think that the wrinkle black with polished ribs looks good. When I did mine I first did a gloss black and it looked somewhat fake. I then did it as a very slight wrinkle and carefully used a sander to polish the ribs and roundel. Chrome could be nice but might be a little too bling-y against the Ceylon
I have my air cleaner off because I was dealing with something underneath it so you can see it in full glory. Close up for the wrinkle.

wrinkle black
but my signature is wrinkle red

if you wana compre various finishes come by the shop I got a lot on the wall
polished, bare , wrinkle black and red

I think I figured there are about 5 different covers
two with the filler on the front large emblem and small
at least three with filler on the rear , the late 70s and early 80s with the emblem and then the B35 has its own

The E12, and E12 based E24 cover has the rear oil filler and the boss. The boss is where the aux air valve gets mounted. As I recall it was under the intake on the earlier E-12 based cars, so they wouldn't have that boss. So that's probably the one to use.

the air flow valve on @sfdon 's setup is on top of the intake manifold - doesn't need the boss on the valve cover

That seems to be a D-Jet thing, since there is no AFM. On the E24, the inlet tube to the throttle body is two pieces and there's an air flow meter between them. The D-Jet uses a MAP sensor instead. The AAV gets mounted to that rectangular boss on the valve cover.

Here's an L-Jet engine with the AAV mounted on

the valve cover boss.

on megasquirt, there is no AFM - there is a 'charge' pipe that connects the air cleaner housing to the throttle body ... there is an air sensor in the pipe. other things in that area disappear as well.
