Hi all,

A while back i joined this forum when purchasing a BMW 2000 C for estoration purposes. Having dismantled this vehicle in stages and commencing repairs, i can say that all is going well with the project, however i have stumbled upon a few things that have me confused.

Manufacturing for these vehicles was said to be between 1965 and 1968/9? What baffles me is that most parts dismantled so far carry a year of manufacture as 1965 which is the start of manufacturing for this type of vehicle, i then decided to wipe away some grime on the inner door manufacturing plate and i see a year of manufacture as 1960 which is strange, this plate does not appear to have been removed or replaced or modified in any way, see photo attached. Also the plate in the engine bay tells me the vehicle is manufactured perhaps in the year '67 if i am going by the VIN number. The steering box has a plate manufactured in 1965. So my question is, "what year is this vehicle made and if it is a 1960 or 1965 model, that would make it only 1 of 3 ever made?"

I look forward to some answers you guys may have.

Cheers!

Is it a C, CS or CA? Makes a difference. Only 443 C were made. Since your VIN is 2561, it is a 66 if a CS or a 67 if a CA. See our e9 Registry for quantity built by year.

Hi Chris, it's a C - 4 speed manual, although a previous owner had the twin solex carb's added sometime during its life time, sad thing is when i purchased the vehicle, one carb was missing :(, planning on installing twin weber 40's or 45's :-D

And the color number 60 = Polaris Silver Metallic

Hi Steve, i expected it to be some sort of silver, considering when i bought the car it was actually painted a dull grey, more like a battle ship grey, i've no idea what the previous owner was thinking, paint on this car in some places is like 1 centimeter thick, layer upon layer. To give you an example of how thick the paint was, the front guards where the nose meets should have a slight angle with a dip, whoever painted this car totally smoothed out the angle so that the front end and guards were all of equal height/thickness. Considering i am doing the restore/strip down myself and by hand (no chemicals or sand blasting) my biceps have grown! :-P

give them your VIN number and they will tell you manufacture date, ship date, ship destination and original color.

Then take that information and go to the CS Registry site and register your coupe!

Best,

Stan

Bill R can confirm VIN numbering scheme, maybe all got the same 100xxxx series.
The 9999 2000CS VINs were in the 110xxxx and 111xxxx ranges.

The source I found shows 3249 2000CA VINs as 100xxxx and 101xxxx ranges.

I think the 443 single carb 4 speed 2000C coupes were also in the 100xxxx ranges.

I have both factory shop and parts manuals and neither shows VIN ranges like all the later cars' manuals do.

Thank you Bill and all others for the replies, have done some searching online and then pulled the whole rear end out of the car on the weekend, Diff, Trailing arms, Suspension etc, cleaned a ton of dirtand grease off the Diff and i believe i have officially found a date which closer resembles my car, stamped on the Differential is the following....2 BMW 1224331800 31K 67, then on the side casing is 2 1967 so i'll accept that this is an early 1967 2000 C :-D
