Hi, New here, just starting on a full restoration.

I have tried the online vin decoders, no luck, anyone know how I can get this accomplished? Just curious about the details the vin holds.

Sorry is this has been discussed somewhere else before, did not find that either.

Thanks

As you discovered, online decoders all play the same game, with 17-digit VINs which were mandated by the Feds.

Anyone fine a "decoder" for the old style VINs? I have a letter from BMW about my CS, but I suspect the old style VINs were not unique and thus undecipherable except within the brand. Perhaps the build date list somewhere in here could give you a "reasonable" fix for production date, but only BMW knows for sure, and they don't give you much.

Isn't also the "Zertifikat" now dead due to liability/fraud concerns?

"Stevehose" had the ticket. Emailed BMW this AM and by mid afternoon got a response, cut and pasted below.

Dear Mr Gossett,

Thank you for your email.

The BMW 3.0 CS US VIN 2240080 was manufactured on July 26th, 1971 and delivered on August 10th, 1971 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Baikal metallic, paint code 042.

We hope this is helpful for you.

Yours sincerely,

Julia Oberndörfer
