I don't know. One of the E24 guys is looking at a car and wants to see what he can find out about it.
You can get build month on RealOEM. There are sites to decode 17 digit VINs but most links are dead or bogus.

The VIN decoders that used to be everywhere are gone.
If you are friendly with a parts guy at the BMW dealer he/she can run the VIN and get you some pretty detailed info.
But that is only the long VIN numbers. Never tried an E9. I have recently checked an 80's E24.
