Vintage Porsche vs. Coupe ownership

I have wanted a 911 for eons. Thought I'd buy one, but the money aspect is a turn off for me now. I have lost interest.

Still interested in seeing what potential lies in a modded Corvair. I am attracted to the design excellence and simplicity. I also quite like the eccentrics who enjoy them. It may be heresy, but I think I would like to sell my 72' 2002 in a year or so and buy an Acura Integra GSR Type R in White. My gut feeling says this is in a way very similar to the original M3. I don't even like the looks of the Integra, but you can hit 9,000 RPM in one when driven wide open.

Acura Integra Type R

Hello,

Couple of years ago I drove a 1991 Porsche 911/964. Although I loved the look, and it was in great condition, I declined. The problem was two-fold. First, it was a Carrera 4 (4WD) and second I had a 1997 Type R to compare it to.

I have no doubt my experience would have been much better if it was the two wheel drive version, however, I truly believe the Type R was a 'rawer' experience. Many who have driven the Type R, as apposed to the GSR, acknowledge that while the very high redline is lovely, and the noise it produces is in the F1 category, it is the chassis (unibody) that is truly breath-taking. And instead of being prone to oversteer (911) or understeer (most FWD) the Type R is sharp, precise and predictable.

In 2012, EVO magazine compared it to the 1st generation M3 and the outcome may be surprising (http://www.evo.co.uk/toyota/gt-86/1...ault-clio-cup-honda-integra-type-r-and-bmw-m3). And if you factor in the maintenance costs, the real beauty of the Type R becomes even more apparent. The only major downfall is that I still 'only' have an old Japanese car and not a Porsche.

Enjoy

Yes, I am particularly attracted to the modifications Honda did to the tub of the car. I think there is fantastic protection from devaluation in any factory special that was built in such limited numbers. I test drove a GSR when my first Corrado was stolen and to this day it was by far the most satisfying clutch -gearbox combo I have driven. You can practically hit any gear at any time.

GSR good, TYPE R better

Hello,

I have not driven a stock GSR, but those who have (please see www.itrca.com) state that the Type R is much better on many fronts. I urge you to test drive both variations before you choose one over the other. And because last year a very low mileage 97R went for over 43K on ebay, you should do it ASAP.

I would not pay 43K for one. It would maybe be back to Corrados or some Euro car we never got here and now can. I hate the fact that the Type R's have been Huge theft magnets too. When it comes to collector cars, there are different options fortunately. I think If I bought, it would hopefully be something that didn't seem like too big an extravagance. I'd be comfortable paying in the 16-18 range. Ultimately simplifying things and doing without is good too. I do like the idea of having something Japanese that really represents that country's engineering excellence.

Yes I agree they're both different cars. I could never afford a 911 let alone a nice coupe (had one or two honest original cars a year or two back but sold them like an idiot), nor could I afford to rebuild a 911's motor. I think it goes with the saying "if you can't buy one don't buy two." So I think the coupe is a beautiful car and dream car of mine, while I can probably afford a 911 now anything I buy will just be...another 911, if you know what I mean. A lot of ppl don't know what an e9 is and confuse them with a corvair and such haha. I want both to be honest. Will get there one day :)

Porsche values have skyrocketed in the past five years, Alfa's are are shooting up, BMW's are really climbing.

Want to know what started the huge price spike?

You can thank Mr. Magnus Walker, a really nice guy actually.

Porsche has the extremely rich race history, they are recognizable to anyone.
Porsche owners are also willing to spend money, large amounts of money, as in price doesn't matter.
