Viscous fan coupling aka Viscosity fan clutch

The setup we use is 1990 e32 735i fan clutch 11 52 7 831 619 and water pump 11 51 9 070 760 and the fan from BMW part #11 52 2 243 303
You will need the matching pulley. We get ours from the bone yard.

We do upgrade to the later tstat and housing where indicated

Let me repeat, I am no expert. That said, the short answer regarding changes and fitment concerns is “few.” If memory serves me correctly, switching to a nine or eleven-bladed fan did not present any fitment issues, although the newer-style fans seem to sit closer to the radiator than with the five blades. Further complicating the fitment is attaching a fan shroud to improve air flow - if your original radiator or radiator support does not readily permit this. (Hint: 2x check those motor mounts and transmission mount to ensure against too much engine movement during severe braking or acceleration.)

Regarding the 400mm versus 420mm conundrum, I cannot speak with any authority as to whether an additional 20mm creates any any additional fitment issue/s. Sight unseen, after 50 years, radiators and radiator placements have a tendency to vary with each application. And . . . if your radiator has been re-cored or replaced, it is impossible to foresee how or by how much the radiator might differ from the original.

Regarding your post whether the highlighted parts would make for a complete upgrade, it appears that the answer is a guarded, “it depends.” If, for example, your vehicle has been in an accident, you might have unforeseen fitment issues. Likewise, not all parts, even new ones, are identical. But, if you are considering a wholesale R&R of the current cooling system, why not upgrade to a new water pump that accepts the eleven-blade fan?

Unless you are experiencing overheating or poor cooling issues, you might consider keeping what has worked for five decades, i.e., five blades. In fact, if your fan clutch is failing to engage, a simple fix might be to try shimming the clutch as mentioned in forum threads, or as a default position, locking the clutch by two lengthy bolts. Obviously, the latter solution is less desirable, considering additional noise and drag. However, it is probably far more common than some might think, considering the cooling issues it might prevent.

Don, i see there are 2 different diameter pulleys - one is 144mm <before 1999> and the other is 130mm <1999+> which are you using? i presume the 144mm since you said 1990 e32.

thats good, i actually have that one on my car, along with the right waterpump. i just need to change the fan and the fan clutch

@Boobouna or @rsporsche, how goes it with the upgrade. Boobouna, you said "all works fine". Did you do the Gen2 version or the Gen4 Don had suggested as an alternate? I upgraded my e39 with an electric fan which I guess is an alternate option here. My car still has the original red 5-blade and given that overheating or fan failure are two quick ways to destroy my engine, this seems like a worthwhile preventative after 50 years of use.
Debating the Gen2 vs Gen4 choices here, will see what I can find online parts-wise.

i installed gen 4. if anybody wants the gen 3 fan + coupling, i have a set that is new that i will sell for what i paid for them (not including shipping), along with the fan shroud - all new, never run ... they were installed but since i had to take the radiator out to put the new parallel flow condenser + fan in place, i went ahead and changed them. the gen 4 is going to be expensive to duplicate as you can't buy the fan in the USA - and for the time being, the tariff + freight make it 150+ just for the fan w/ shipping + tariff.

17111115083 fan shroud - now 130+ - i paid 85
11521723918 fan clutch - now 80 (300 from BMW) - i paid 80
11521273086 BMW fan - now 84 - i paid 65
fan pulley - you will have to source

so if you buy new 294 (now) - or i will sell for 225 plus shipping

@rsporsche I guess I’ll go for the gen3 then and take that set off your hands. I’ll message you separately. Sounds like Gen3 is at least better than what I have currently (Gen0?)
