Voltage regulator Problem

I have a phone charger/voltage gauge wired n my car it was showing the alternator putting out 17.2 volts. I checked at the battery and it was showing 17.2 I installed a new voltage regulator a couple of years ago but I suspected it was bad. I still had the previous voltage regulator (Hella) so I cleaned it up with sandpaper to make sure there would be a good ground. When I swapped it out the two I also checked the battery cables and cleaned them up real good. Now the voltage gauge is showing 13.6. My goal is to switch to an internal regulator alternator sometime in the future like my 71.
 
Even the internal ones can have a problem. I was having the same issue with a “new” regulator with 17 V out and problem solved with swapping the internal regulator. Just as an FYI
 
all very true about regulators. that's one reason i added a voltage gauge to my new gauge cluster. all new wiring + grounds on the charging circuit. the good news is that a regulator (external or internal) is very easy to swap out ... its all about knowing you have an issue before it gives up the ghost.
