Hello, Just about to get started on exchanging my four speed transmission for a five speed. While I have the transmission out, I am planning on inspecting the flywheel/ Clutch for any needs. The starter makes a occasional noise like turning on the starter while all ready running. Suspect gear tooth damage to either the starter or flywheel ring. I can find a starter motor just about anywhere,
Does any body have a flywheel ring in good shape for a 1972 BMW Bavaria with a manual trans? If so , How much with shipping to Venice, Florida. 34285 please.

Thank you

I saw this the other day. I would suspect your starter/solenoid. Get the later model smaller/more powerful starter if needed,

Mike, I'm in to deep to even dream about money back. I have seen ads for the smaller more powerful starters. I'm going to start tomorrow with removal of clutch and such,
Thank you Steve, I owe you a bird dog. Gotta find the numbers on that ring.

Thank you.

Does the auto use the same flywheel as a stick? I thought not as the auto uses a flex plate to mount to the torque converter. I bought a flywheel for my e12 when I do the swap from auto to 5 speed.

No. Automatic flywheel is different. I too used an e12 flywheel for my swap.

And I bought a SR441X when I went to the smaller starter.

The ring gears have been NLA for quite some time, there was a fellow out of Turkey that had some but that was a least a couple of years ago. I think the best that you can do is get another used flywheel and ring gear also, engines usually stop in the same six places all the time, you could try removing the ring gear and remounting it in a different spot IF you can't find a used one'

Thanks, Rick

You don't have to do any real machining to remove the ring gear. You drill two holes into the ring gear 180 degrees apart and then strike it with a hammer to break it in half.
Put your new ring gear in the oven after your wife has gone shopping and once it is hot use some heavy leather gloves like welding gloves to handle it and place it onto the flywheel.
PM sent.

Hello Sherman, I got the flywheel out and the ring is not that bad but the disc surface is grooved badly. It is about 11 and a half inch's across, Eight holes with one larger for the hollow collet, weighs about 18 lb's un boxed. Could you look over your flywheel again for faults and send me back a price to include shipping and handling please?

Thank you.

Hello wkohler, I have not heard from Sherman and your offer interest me. I need a flywheel with the best ring you have to offer and machined so the disc surface is 0.50 to 1.0 mm stepped up. with shipping boxing to Venice, Florida please.

Thank you.
