Hi, I have this 3.5 euro type engine and it has a very clear F painted on the side near the 3.5 stamp.

I am sure it is an M90 engine, but any idea what the F means??

Please see pics.

Thanks for any info. I have asked this question before, but am gearing up to put this engine in after preparation and rebuilding as required.

Hi OZCSi,

34 6E B means it is a M30B34

In other words it is the 3430ccm (86x92mm) Motronic unit, with 218ps.
It was used on the 635csi and 735i between 5/1982 and 1986.

The M90 (84x93.4mm) has a white L painted on the block.

Hmmm,

I am so confused by this ....and thanks for your reply. The engine doesnt have typical motronic, so am really going to get into this with as much info as I can give for the board.

Although it is not clear in the picture, it is almost assuredly has 3543 stamped on it in the pictures. This doesnt really macth anything, but is stamped in, so maybe just an engine number??? ( 3453cc i would understand !! being cc etc)But it is just so hard to get any info here on these engines in terms of other details that are apparent.

I am wondering if there is any other identifiers . I am sure it came out of a euro 535i here in Australia.

I will look harder and really appreciate the help with this .

Andrew

Hi HB Chris,

I thought I had listed it under csi's.

Will check now. It is a polaris silver rhd csi with original 3.0 here in Australia

Cheers

Now I am thinking a lot!!

I should have added;

This engine has the log type manifold with I am sure L jet injection as it has a distributor!!!

Does any of this mean anything to you guys who really know these engines?

Remanufactured engine?

It appears the 3542 stamp is next to a round after market rebuilder identification tag. I've seen similar tags on engines remanufactured here in california. Perhaps that number was added by the rebuilder.

If it helps.... I have an original euro M535i 81 the number you quoted is similar but not the same.
Number on mine is 35 6E A. I would suggest it's not the M90 :(

Which BMW variants had the M90 engine? As far as I'm aware it was only the euro E12 M535i and the late 70's early 80's 635CSi.

Cheers

Thank you so much for your reply. I am thinking that as the e9 coupe web site has so many US based fans, that this may be an engine that is not common being a euro version.

This engine is mated to a 5 speed with mechanical drive for the speedo.........

I am doing a lot more checking and am also sure that it is not an M90, but may have been reworked with a non stad stroke/bore etc. The guy I bought it from who has sadly passed was a genuine tinkerer!! Now I need more info, he can no longer help me, which is a shame, because it may have some mods!

Cheers and best wishes

I dont think you could really identify the engine from the ancillaries unless you pulled it from a car with the same chassis number as the engine. It might have been a bare long motor that "the tinkerer" has added those bits to.

Does the head have any casting numbers, date castings, etc? It might not be off that bottom end?

If it is really unknown, wouldn't you pull the sump off and have a look?

Hi again and thank you all so much for your help.

Here is a pic of the casting numbers on the inlet manifold side of the head.

The head casting is from an m30b32 or b34. They are the same casting and came on cars from '83-'88. You should be able to find a circled date on the head casting telling you what year it was manufactured. It will probably be between '82-'87.

Am about to put this engine on a stand and decipher what it is and what is needed.

Still looking at that F painted On block and wonder what it means.

Since I started this thread years ago, does anyone have any more clues.

It has a log manifold.
It has a distributor. So does that mean it's L Jet not moronic
It has 3.5 cast into block
It has the m30b34 on starter area of block.

Any new info would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Oz

As a long suffering m110 mercedes owner enduring the delights of CIS injection ...maybe moronic is a bit strong.

In reality, it was my tablet spellcheck that changed it from Motronic.

Ha!!

Compression numbers please.
C tubes and dizzy don't mean much.
How bout the date on the right side of the block?
Oblong embossed with date inside.
Date on head please.
Need pic of left side of block.
Need pic of numbers stamped above starter.

At the start of this thread there is a few pics.

I will get more when I get back to engine.

Many thanks
