This button is not for the rear defrost (thats on the other side of the wheel). It pushes in and I can hear a click sometimes when I do so, but it does not stay in (like the defrost button)
So, please-What is it?

By the way, this pic was taken before I removed the other 2 non-oem buttons and repaired the vynil.

Red, Yellow & Green

Believe the three factory buttons were designed as follows:

Red=4 way emergency flasher
Yellow=rear window defrost
Green=switch for rear fog clearance light

Theory--perhaps someone substituted the yellow button--they screw on and off--for the rear fog light, therefore unlike the defroster button it doesn't stay in when pushed and instead clicks.....

What button?

North American spec model E-9's were not equipped with fog clearance lights--though for many areas--think Central Valley of California and the coastal areas both South and North would have made a lot of sense. We were well behind the safer lighting requirements that were a standard in Europe. Our Department of Transportation was protecting the financial interests of Sylvania and GE. Think our wimpy sealed beam headlights versus halogen--the Euro standard then--and still fine for most conditions.

While a large number of Euro spec cars were fitted with fog clearance lights--according to requirements for same as specified by many of the countries to which they were scheduled for delivery.

Yes--there is provision in the standard wiring that came with both NA and Euro spec E-9's. In the absence of the trim piece between tail-lights that had a built in space provided for a light--some owners have purchased a light that was available for the early Porsche. I have one installed on my 2002 located below the rear bumper. I bought it from Mesa Performance several years ago. Whenever my headlights are on--it's also on--kind of a warning--"stay back from my rear end"--as the light is about 10X the intensity of regular taillights

Very informative! Next I guess I start looking for unused wires near theleft tailight, and then for a vintage euro tail light to mount.

Thanks all!
