M90s are not the same as M30s, they were found in euro e24s. Show us some pics.

...and E12 M535 also, though that again might be a Europe only thing.

An M90 has the same 3453 displacement as the 24 valve M88 engine (same block?) and has a few other differences from the 3430cc M30B34 which superseded it in the E24. Has a reputation for having a bit more grunt than the M30, but its 93.4mm bore meant the CH gasket was vulnerable
 
The M30 is a particular BMW engine design. The letters after usually indicate the displacement a particular series of M30 engines.

Wow, thank you for that. It is so obvious now that I reference it, yet that number/displacement relationship never occurred to me.
