What is an Alpina E3 / 2800 ?

I occasionally like to look at Euro vehicles on the Autoscout24 website. This car caught my attention:

I recognize the Alpina wheels, but I'm not familiar with the Alpina badges on the hood & trunk. It appears to be a Series II vehicle, based on the c-pillar. I was wondering if one of our forum members could comment? Does this car have special mods or tuning?
 
hard to tell without any pictures of the engine or documentation of a B2, B2-S or B3 engine, suspension, etc. right now i would have to guess its like a 528e or 535 with a 'M' badge on it ... all lipstick + rouge.

Agreed. It looks very nice, but based on the asking price it's likely an Alpina "tribute" car. Wheels appear to be standard 14" e12 with Alpina badges. Rear seat also looks to be e12 or e28, different color than the door cards.

Autscouto24.com can be very addictive;)
 
This car is either a 2500 with a retrofitted 2.8 or, less likely, a 2800. It is either a Series 2 or a Series 3 (indicator stalk, wiring loom, track width, petrol tank, etc.). It was first registered in November 1973 in, don't know, and came to the Netherlands in October 1999. It might be a good car or not. It has retrofitted seats (origin?), doorpanels (3 litre), headlights, trailer hitch, LPG liquid gas gear, wheels (E12), "Alpina" script on the bootlid, "Alpina" badges here and there and probably more.

There are no pictures of the driver's place, neither seat nor wheel or dashboard. I don't see this as a good sign. No pictures of the engine bay, either. I don't see this... Honestly: who would try to sell a car with Alpina parts and not show the all important engine?

Alpina cars with trailer hitches are very rare, even in the Netherlands. On the other hand, cars that run on liquid gas are common there but only a parvenu would convert a true Alpina to LPG.

There were Alpina E3 just like there were E9.
B1 - 2.8 litre, about 1970/71, before the 3 litre appeared
B2 - 3 litre, about 1971-77, carburettors
B2S - 3 litre, carburettors, S=forged pistons (Schmiedekolben)
B3 - 3 litre, D-Jetronic, overly rare
 
There is a genuine Alpina E3 in the Alpina exhibit ("60 Years of Excellence") currently at the BMWCCA Foundation in South Carolina. Not sure which of Christoph's types it may be. Can't find a photo right now.

Yes, I was merely the circus master who cajoled Alpina and the owners to put this show together :-) with the help of everybody else involved in the Foundation. But as Danny @eastsideM3 is on here and was kind enough to loan his car to the Foundation, I wouldn't be so presumptuous as to describe his car, I will let him do so - or maybe somebody took a picture of the board we created in front of his car.

Thanks, Peter. Unless I'm mistaken, Danny owns both the Alpina E3 and E9 in the exhibit. Fabulous examples. Would love to see some pics and more background posted here.
