Some colors to me capture the spirit of the E9 better than others. My top three that I feel compliment the design best are Colorado, Ceylon and my new favorite Taiga. My least favorite I would have to say is the Schwarz black. I feel it hides all the beautiful lines. What would be your best and worst pick?

Funny thing is my car was originally Polaris painted Baikal at some point, which none are on my top three list. Polaris might make it in the top five.

Third Rail Warning

Nobody likes to hear their baby is ugly. But I understand your topic is opinion so I guess is will stay to the positive.

Turkis, Tiaga, Ceylon, and Inka - of course Chamonix :-P
Schwartz actually looks great when clean and shiny!

interesting thing about schwarz - it can look great in certain light ... just not as expressive as nacht or atlantik, but it is very light dependent as well as how much shine the paint has.

polaris is a classic color, and i prefer it greatly to the equally common fjord. both of these colors are the ones you see the most.

blues + greens (in order of favorites) - riviera, turkis, baikal, taiga, atlantik / nacht, agave ... others somewhere down the line

strong colors - ceylon, inka, verona, colorado

other colors - chamonix, polaris, malaga

Current favorites: Ceylon, Turkis (these colors catch the eye)
Not my cup of tea: Schwarz ( I have a few black vehicles already), Sienna Brown, Sahara.
My e9: Agave ( looks good in bright light and in late afternoon shade). Not everyone's cup of tea, but gets thumbs up by drivers and pedestrians alike.

Favorites for me depend on if it's a Bat or not. On normal Coupes, I love Malaga, then Fjord, then Atlantik. On Bats the order is Tiaga, Golf then Polaris.

Low on the list are Sahara (I know...my color), Schwarz and Chamonix.

Taiga looks great on my daughter's 02. My favorite color on the E9 is Turkis

you know all of this is relative to how good everything is under the paint ... and whether you are buying a car or repainting a car.

so i ask you, would you take a really nice sahara, chamonix, schwarz on a great rust free / well sorted out car ... or would you rather have a turkis, taiga, ceylon, inka on a so-so car with some lurking rust?

i presume this discussion is really about what color to paint a coupe that has perfect metal and needs a finish coat. But, i maintain that although you might buy a car for its color ... i really think that's a secondary item after the condition of the car.

I was on a day trip with my wife yesterday, and we were discussing colors.

I keep coming back to Inka. I would go with Taiga, but it's too "matchbox car" for her taste. Turkis started to look appealing, but we both get a 90's Honda civic vibe from the color.

Adding to the Bat observation, I think that Inka and Taiga look magnitudes better with CSL fenders and striping. I don't know why. I don't really want a CSL clone, but I would likely head that direction to compliment the paint.

I think that the E9 looks great in any shade of blue. Fjord looks incredible. I just can't see myself stripping the car down to bare metal and respraying it a color that can be seen on thousands of Honda Odysseys across the globe. This brings me back to Inka.

I know however that after spraying it Inka, I will long for a more conservative color at times. I really like Black, but black on black isn't ideal IMO, and I agree that it hides the lines. All of the black E9 project cars look terrible, and the few black restored E9's look stunning. If I go with black, I will have cardinal red leather.

Decisions decisions!!!

Orange is the new black......

The best color is...

...the one you love.

That having been said, the E9's size and lines make it look good in a large variety of colors. By that I mean... IMHO, the E24, a much larger car, is a bit much in red. That's a **** ton of red. But E9s look great in red. In terms of lines, the Z3 M Coupe is a car whose lines are so extreme it doesn't need a poppy color like the red, green, blue, and yellow it comes in. Silver understates the extreme lines very nicely. But the E9's lines are so elegant and understated that it can tolerate poppy colors like Tiaga and Golf. Personally I think that Inka is a bit much on an E9, but that's just me.

I did basically what you're asking. I bought the best that my weekend car budget could afford, in the wrong color. I passed on a Verona Coupe that looked a lot better, but had some serious issues. I'd do it again and get the better skeleton wearing the wrong color suit.

Oddly enough I've grown to actually really enjoy the color of my car, but when I repaint it, I'm sending it to Don for a B35, and while the engine is out I'll change the color to Malaga. If I was alive to have ordered this car new, I wouldn't have picked this color.

A big problem with Sahara too is that it doesn't photograph well. Here's some examples of my car in different light.

I really like Sahara. I almost went for an e28 in a similar color (forget the name, not Bronzit). I also like the flat grey color that one of our PNW owners has.

I remember when I first saw flat colors make their way back onto the new car scene with the newly introduced Audi TT. I was in love. I don't mean "murdered out" flat black, you know non metallic.

Well, the '71 2800 CS auto I bought in 1973 was nachtblau mit schwarz, and the '73 3.0 CS manual I bought in 1975 was nachtblau mit gelbbraun. When I decided to look for a replacement CS last spring, I planned to find one in either that color or Atlantik. Baikal, Fjord,or Tundra - all with tan interior. But, my first view of an e9 was at the NY Auto show in ~1970, a fjord with white interior - LUST at first site!

But, the one that really caught my eye in a Hemmings Ad was none of these. I liked it when I first saw it up close and personal, and after having it here for 2 months, I like it even more. It is a non-standard color that was used by Porsche in the early '80's, called Surinamrot metallisch. Very close to Granatrot, but with a slight bit of copper tint. And, it has a grey interior (which will be replaced with some version of tan over the winter).

What I liked best about this car was that it had been completely restored 22 years ago, and well kept ever since, and no rust was to be found anywhere. THAT was - to me - more important in the decision and purchase than the specific color. Secondarily it has the Motor Metrics Sport 3.8+ (they called it 4 liter) FI engine and a rebuilt 265/6 transmission. Just frosting on the cake for my driving interests with this car.

Still really like all those colors above, however!!
