What is the best type of oil to use?

With high zinc oil, factor in taking your plugs out every other month to clean them because zinc buildup will cause electrical continuity that degrades the spark. Don’t believe me? Check them with a multimeter.
Huh. I've used 20W50 VR1 in my 911 for a decade and have never had to touch the plugs other than changing them once.

if zddp is the highest criteria, then you need to look at Motul Classic 20w-50 - its 1800+, if you have a b35 engine, you might consider the Motul Classic Nineties 15w-40. also with a 1800+. Penngrade1 (former brad penn) is over 1500. i couldn't find any data on VR1 or Castrol Classic GTX.

i am going to use Motul 15w-40 break-in oil on my new engine and then will determine what oil i use in the car.

I use Bob's Reclaimed Oil.... just filter it through my t-shirt to get the sludge out.. :D

Actually, I'm in the Castrol GTX 20/50 crowd...

i used to use castrol gtx in my first 2 - 2002 and my bavaria - the inside of the valve cover was always brown. in my last 2002, i used valvoline the entire time and the inside of the valve cover was aluminum color. so i quit using castrol and have never gone back to it. my e30 m3 ran brad penn - inside of the valve cover was also perfect.
