Before I go ahead with a new headliner(finding a close match is not easy - three samples in hand) what does the group use to clean an original headliner? I fear so many products will be too strong, break down the material, etc, etc.

Advice please.

I've had some success (carefully) with Mr. Clean eraser, rather than liquid anything. There will be "dust" from what it removes, but vacuums up easily...and use the brush attachment afterwards on headliner.
About fifteen years ago, I had an NOS headliner (yippee!) that I bought off of fleabay, that I sent to Korman when the car was there for de-rust/paint, and the upholstery (outsourced vendor) guy tried to install. All of the thread was dry-rotted and the seams all blew out (negative yippee!) In hindsight, I should have asked for the remnants back....

THE best is softscrub
super easy on fabric and cleans everything
I have been using softscrub on our glass shower doors to prevent lime, etc buildup. Can't find it in the spray container, just a screw top container. Should I , if I can find it, spray on a cloth and apply that way. Does not see like a good idea to spray anything on the head liner. Or other Suggestions? Open to any and all.

Does Mr. Clean eraser do a uniform cleaning of the entire headliner?

I recently had some success with using a hand cleaner : "Fast Orange" filled with lanolin and such. Massage in with a nail brush. it really works out grime. Wipe away, and then use a wet cloth to free some more dirt. Has successfully invigorated some 54 year old English car vinyl. "Your mileage may vary". Good luck. Mike

Mr Clean was pretty consistant for me. Its cheap, and does'nt make a wet, slimy mess...(This was an idea that I stole from the 2002faq board) If you have stains, something else might be better. I liked that there was no liquid leaving a residue that can't realistically be rinsed very well en situ. Anything not cleaned well and rinsed well, will, of course, just attract more dirt. If I had a headliner not in a car, I'd probably be using Softscrub lemon with bleach, my favorite for door vinyl, dash vinyl, etc. Cleans safely and kills evil micro bugs.

I’ve used the softscrub lemon with bleach on my visors in the past and it worked very well (but I had taken them out of the car). I suppose if you cover everything in the interior and only use damp cloths vs dripping wet as Alan said it should work.

I use Folex to spot clean everything. The E24 guys all swear by it. Quart bottle with sprayer is about 5 bucks at Home Depot. Stuff pulls coffee out of carpet like you can believe.
