What to do while windshields are out / headliner question.

I just stripped Kingfish for a long overdue respray. While I've got the windshields out, is there anything extra I should be doing while I have the access? I've already pulled the totally destroyed rear parcel shelf for renewal.

Also, the headliner was attached using small metal clips, an attachment method I've never seen before. I was having some water leak issues around both seals and wonder if these have anything to do with it. Should I remove them?

Finally, some of the headliner seems excessively over-wrapped. Back to the water leak issue, should I trim these down?

Fellow '74 sunroof owner: Look carefully at the roof area along the rear of the sunroof opening for rust bubbles. There is a support/stiffener under the roof (can't see it with the headliner in place obviously) that is attached to the roof with foam rubber which of course collects moisture and you can imagine what happens. You may want to remedy that design flaw if you decide to remove the headliner. AMHIK.

You mean like this:

So I can see a little bit of what you're talking about. Are you recommending to pull the metal stiffener, or just the foam insulation?

When the Polaris polecat was stripped to bare metal, the seven (yes seven) bubbles revealed the iceberg theory of e9 rust pretty quickly...a slick top was sourced and grafted. I was told it would impossible to repair the inner rust. (other than an acid dip, which just saying it outloud is pretty scary...) So far, so good on the grafts at the four pillars after almost twenty years....Some 2002 guys have sourced the skin only, drilled out the spot welds and re-skinned...I plead ignorant as to whether that is an alternative here...seems less invasive if its possible.

To your original question, the headliner and black vinyl should not cover that edge. The edge should only be covered by the windshield rubber. The metal clips are not supposed to be there.

There is no way other than cutting out the sunroof frame to get under/between it and the roof to fix that rust. See pics such as:

Metal finishing that large flatish surface is no picnic. Pick your body shop wisely.

I think that the dashboard top is easily removed when the screen is out.
and the headliner of course. They are available new and of very high quality. But the sun shades will have to be removed and cleaned. I had mine resprayed which worked out quite well. Cleaning didn’t do much.
headliners for sunroof cars exist as well.

I personally don't believe that this statement is correct. I think that the overlapping vinyl as well as the metal clips are factory. I encourage others to chime in on the subject. I wish I had more pics, but both the pillar vinyl as well as the roof vinyl overlapped the windshield frame. I've seen many examples of people using binder clips on the windshield frame, including @Gransin. I have also had a conversation with @Roger S about the vinyl spring clips on his car.

@02coastie,

IMO, I would weld up the extra speaker hole while you have the glass out. Mig sparks will burn through glass, and the fumes are a little harder to deal with with the glass in. I plan to weld up all (5!!!) of mine, but I can see from your radio that you probably like listening to music in your E9. If you feel like swapping locations, a lot of people put them under the passenger seat facing forward.

I think you are actually right Markos. And that im wrong on this. It was just how it was in my car, which i believed was factory condition, but i was wrong. I just read some other threads (I'm trying to figure out how to remove my the headliner) and they all showed me i was wrong in this.
Which also means that I cannot just put everything back the way i found it, it might be incorrect. i have to start digging...

You used the word "wrong" way too many times. :D Don't be so hard on yourself! The design defies common sense, and simply wouldn't work with a modern adhesive-applied windscreen. :D

Well, just for fun I looked in the parts books. E3 and 2002 use four of these clips, there is no clip in the e9 book.

Does the 2002 book have the long clips? I honestly can't recall what my CSI had, but I did have a conversation with Roger about them. He described them more like what is seen below. I specifically recall *not remembering the clips and having him describe them. 2002FAQ seems to suggest that they changed over time. Perhaps they disappeared in the production run.

2002s definitely changed with those strips. The parts book showed four small clips only and that part didn’t apply to e9. The e9 book shows nothing that I could find.
