In the Porsche world the actual body number is stamped there....I am not sure where I read this but our body number is written (hidden) somewhere on the chassis...

In my car 2800CSA sn 2220098 (july 1969) the original Karmann plaque shows the Karmann bodyserial number and the paint code. In this case paint code 042 baikal blue. My car is later repainted in Chamonix.

yes, that makes sense, body number, internal karmann, thanks

on an e9 remains bmw vin, on the Porsche mentioned probably karmann number rule

remembers me of a story about imported bmw cars into Spain during the import limitation times
people converted e9s to cabrios to get a vin number from the bodyshop, this way they were not importing a bmw, thus avoid number limitations

Maybe that explains the pictures of the convertible E9 in Spain from awhile back.

I am curious about the import limitations. Were there any other cars being made in Spain besides Seats?

yes of course, those are the weird and rare Spanish convertibles, they are not registered as BMWs, I shared this story a while ago for a blue e9 cabrio that made the officers puzzle as to what kind of car it was, lots of bmw logos, but no bmw vin

spain was during 40+ years under a dictatorship with strong restrictions to imports a very protective economy trying to push internal production as you can imagine,

the national company for cars was SEAT, but there were other car brands that produce cars in Spain under license of their mains, as renault, ford and citroen,

SEAT products were very much connected to FIAT, i.e. the SEAT 600 based in the FIAT 500

another brand that was present but in much less proportion was GOGGOMOVIL (embryonic to GLASS, the well know company to bmw enthusiasts) with a very small factory in Mungia, close to Bilbao, this was under license of the German company and they produced only a few cars

all this is from top of my head, so very little precision in it, sorry
