Can someone tell me is the offset on the e28 the same as the e9?
Ive got the chance to buy some 17" x 8" wheels for my e9, the wheels im buying are currently on an 86 e28, will they fit my e9?

17x8" wheels

ET 20 in 17x8 with 225/45/17 fit front with front fender lips rolled and possibly needing a 1 to 3mm spacer (mine didn't).

ET 20 in 17x8 with 245/40/17 fit the rear with no problems. 17x9 fit the rears if ET 26.

The seller has told me that the et is 15 and the rims are 8.5x17, the back space measures 5.3/4 inches so will these fit my E9?. Im still no wiser on this ET systemtho, in years of motorsport my fellow racers and suppliers always used inches when requiring a backspace.
Il grasp it one day I suppose.

Pretty confident that the front won't work. My 17x8 ET 20 has a 5.3" back space and JUST fits so the 5.75" will be on the struts. If you put in a spacer then the fender gets in the way.

Here's a web based calculator I find helpful in comparing combinations. Enter a known wheel spec that works like 16 x 7 x ET 11 (front staggered Alpina) or my 17x8xET20 in the left side and the proposed wheel in the right and it will give you some relative clearances.

This is not a guarantee of fit - just a good indicator so buyer beware still applies.

What wheels are you running now and what are you looking for in new wheels? Roadholding confidence, comfort, or both? I had staggered 16" Alpinas on my E9 and found it compromised the ride way more than I thought acceptable because of less rubber to cushion blows and the increased unsprung weight. The Alpinas including tyres weighed about twice the standard 14" wheel of the CS, which are actually very nice and light wheels. The Alpinas also made acceleration noticeably slower. I am afraid 17" will be even worse - but it depends on what you're used to and want.

Because good 14" tyres are difficult to find and I do like a spirited drive, my best compromise was 15" BBS wheels - 8J at the back, 7J at the front.
Even when rolled, 8J at the front is very likely to hit the fender, especially when hitting a bump into a corner. Also, having tried and seen about all wheel combos possible on a CS, I believe 7J is the largest you should fit at the front because more just doesn't look right.

Thank you chaps for the replys, your dead right chamoixe9 redarding bigger rims and less rubber equals uncomfortable ride. Ive picked up a set of alpina 17" with a backspace of 5.1/4 inches which are the same as the 840i e31 rims that are on it at present. But for long journeys and shows/meets, ive got a set of gen 6x14 and 6.5x14 bmw lights with theetal caps which are in Brand new condition.

Its not a simple task buying wheels for an e9, the choices we make realy do make or break the look of our cars, shallow I know but its got to look good.
Thanks again.
