You'll never guess where I found this within the car. But before I reveal that, does anyone know where this would have been used in a coupe? From the lettering on the surface, I've identified it as a gasket product from Interface Solutions Inc. Their CS-301 datasheet describes it as "standard/nonasbestos gasket material". I'd thought it was leather at first, but evidently that is not the case:

"CS-301 has a controlled-swell styrene butadiene rubber binder. It is intended for use in applications with water, high analine point oil, and other applications not including aromatic fuels and certain solvents, and with short duration maximum temperatures up to 180 degree C (350 degree F).

Now that I know that it is a gasket material, the shape and hole pattern starts to remind me of an oil pan gasket??? I haven't compared the spacing of the holes yet.

My thought as well...below the polished aluminum for the sunroof.....this is where you tell us you do not have a sunroof..........

Ha ha, yes I do have a sunroof. I think @stphers and @bavbob theory is plausible. When I took the sunroof out/apart, it had the phenolic pieces that the cable ran over. I honestly don't know if other parts were missing - I guess I'll figure that out when I have to put it all back together. But I found this scrap of "gasket" material IN THE FRAME RAIL on the right hand/passenger side. It must have fallen through the rectangular or oval hole while an access cover was off (and the carpet and padding would have had to be out as well). I wish I could know everything this car has been through. But there is 42.5 years of history that I will likely never know.
