Hi guys

I am looking to buy a louder front speaker, the current one is stock and it is pretty silent. I have a retro headunit with some power and I would like to upgrade the stock one.

I have seen on this forum some suggestions such as Alpine SPS etc. I was wondering is it really an improvement with this speaker? Is there anything better besides Retrosound?

Thanks

I don’t think that retrosound makes a speaker that will fit into that space. I installed a retrosound head unit and their amp/subwoofer combo under the rear seat, but used the alpine wired in mono for the speaker behind the wooden grill.

considering this Sony….thoughts?

I don’t remember where on the forum someone had specifically recommended the Alpine, but I thought there was some reason that one worked better than others. The Sony is a 4x6 so should work out fine. Just know that the center tweeter is often the limiting factor since it will bump up against the inside of the wooden grill. It should not matter if it’s touching, since that plastic portion is just a shield, not the actual speaker, but I found even with the alpine I needed to route out the wood where the speaker attaches to allow it to inset a bit. Even with that there is the slightest bulge in the center of the wooden grill from the speaker behind - not noticeable but if you push on it you can feel it. An alternative might be shaving down the very front of that plastic grill. Let us know how it turns out, and if you end up with two throw the other one up on here; I’m sure someone would want it.
Also, you will need to get a specific adapter to run a mono signal from the stereo output of your head so that it blends L/R.

The Alpine SPS-406 is a good fit for that center dash location. They pop up on eBay occasionally which is where I bought mine. They fit the original speaker mount holes and sound great without a cover but unfortunately the stock wooden dash grill with the slots does dampen the sound quality a bit
