Hi

I am having trouble finding the Ignitor for my car - 1976 BMW 3.0S carburettor

I wrongly purchased a 1868 after reading website La Jolla Independent that the 80mm distributor requires the 1868

Now that I checked my distributor for the part number it appears I have a BOSCH distributor PFUD6 0-231-309-005

I looked up kits on Pertronix and the closest BOSCH part match is 0-231-309-001 (a BOSCH distributor part number for a Mercesdes)

It says for 0-231-309-001 the Ignitor is 1862 but the pictures I see of this version shows a round baseplate - full circle

I don’t see how this will fit my distributor 0-231-309-005 or 0-231-309-001 because they are both identical in the points area and it will foul the advance lever

I have attached photos of what I have with points and condenser removed and the 0-231-309-001 to show how very similar they are

As you can see the 1862 will not fit my distributor if the baseplate is indeed a full circle

Can someone please tell me which Ignitor I need to buy and if they have the same type of distributor as me?

thanks Michael

Did you speak to Carl directly?

No, I emailed

I got a reply saying "This car should have the small case distributor, use Pertronix 1867A"

which does not help me because my car has the 80mm diameter distributor (large case according to his website) with vacuum advance and retard and I even gave him the Bosch part number so it appears the replier, if its Carl, didn't check the distributor.

can't believe its so hard to find an Ignitor part for my distributor

cheers, Michael

Just an update

Carl from La Jolla Independent was very helpful. He persisted in trying to fit the right baseplate for my distributor and is sending me a baseplate for a 1847 to try out.

Since then Mark from the "e9 club' in Perth, lent me his baseplate for the 1867 to try and fit. We discussed the matter of my e3 having an 80mm distributor as the common belief is that it should have a 65mm distributor

My E3 is 1976 and there is a change from 1975 onwards, hence why my distributor is the same size as a injected car, without the draw off for the injection.

Finally, after a number of emails from Pertronix in the US saying anything from no product suitable to try the 1862 (again totally wrong baseplate as it;s full circle) I find in my TRASH folder an email from Marvin Grebow Jr. of Tech Depart Pertronix

Martin has the correct answer because I eventually came across it myself from further internet research and looking at Mercedes installations.

The Pertronix unit for the 0-231-309-005 distributor is the 1869 !

It fits the 0-231-308-003 which is the distributor in the photo below courtesy of Marvin

As you can see the baseplate is designed perfectly to fit the internals

I and everyone who has been helping me can now rest knowing the answer to my problem

thanks all

Michael
