Hi all, need some advise from any of you with experience.

I am getting near the end of my rebuild, I had the windshield installer over the other day to put the glass back in, got the rear in OK, but the front he cant see how to do with the dash pad in place, the gap between the body and the dash pad only being about 3mm in places.
Not really sure whats gone on here, who really knows after 40 odd years, anyhow, as a fix there was a spiky lip of black vinyl on the front edge of the dash pad, i have decided (and done) to trim this off, it opens the gap for the screen rubber up to about 6mm ish, and while the dash pads is out, get it recovered by our local dashboard resto guy as it has a crack in one end and a earlier repair that wasn't very nice.

So, at this point I'm thinking, my windshield is pretty average anyway, and I don't want to have to go through any grief/risk down the track with the dash, the rubber seal for the windshield getting damaged, decorative molding that goes around the windshield getting wrecked etc, and I will bite the bullet and get a new windshield now and get the whole lot done in one go so I don't have to touch it again.

My question is...(as there are none in NZ) has anyone had experience with WN windshields?
they seem quite happy to ship to me here in NZ, but I'm just a bit nervous about it not being from BMW and finding it wont fit etc, I don't really have a problem with it not being OEM, I just don't want the grief of it coming 1/2 way around the world and find it doesn't fit!

I haven't contacted BMW for a price yet (to nervous) but landed here from WN I will be looking at about $1200, so its not a cheep exercise for me, I need to make sure its all going to work!

Thanks

Steve

Have you tried one of your local auto windscreen companies? I went to pilkington glass (who make a lot of classic windscreens) and they ended up getting a mainstream company to fit it. I was very nervous about it but they had it in within 20 minutes, and pointed out that it was far harder to do a modern bonded screen. Cost was £240 fitted

I bought one for one of my E3s from W&N a couple of months ago and fitted it myself within 30 Minutes. Just follow the instructions in the factory manual, it's not that hard really :-)
Cheers

WN winscreens.

Had one from WN for my CSi. Excellent service. Had a guy from local windscreen fitting service. Took 1 hour to do both front and rear screen.
Result!

My local BMW dealer said both the glass and the seal are available but it will take a couple of months to deliver. This probably means they are made to order. About $500 for the windshield so not as bad as you might have thought.

Steve, I got my windscreen new from BMW (Coombs Johnson) - fits great. It was imported from Germany and I believe it was around NZD1,800 all up. Fortunately (or unfortunately) my original windscreen was broken when some guy knocked it over on the floor when It was out of the car.....

Just as a matter of corse I rang team Mc Millan BMW dealers today, retail was $1350 ex Germany and they will give me a 15% discount, so will work out about $1150 ish which is what WN screen would end up costing me landed, and getting it hear in one piece will be there worry, not mine!

So much happier about this now

Data point

I just bought a new windshield from my local dealer after the &^$(#( truck in front of me either dropped a rock or kicked it up this morning on the way to work. Nearly came all the way thru, left a major star. $&$^#% Houston freeways!

Anyway, it was about $480 after my Vintage/Club discount, delivery in two weeks. 48 left in Germany so get yours today!

I just had a new glass installed because of pitting in the old glass, I had a new W&N seal, a $200 aus glass, and while the fit is not perfect , it went straight in.
Happy to send details if needed.
Burky.

Interestingly, the guy at the glass shop said not to buy the new rubber gasket, the old one is in good shape and the new one would probably not fit. I'm sure the glass will fit but the 40+ YO body may have *relaxed* a bit. Will post updates in a couple of weeks.

(Koopman, you mail is full)

Carl Nelson commented once long ago to the effect that coupe bodies can be tweaked from age and use and the result can make the windshield hard to fit.

Reading between the lines, if a windshield that is dimensionally correct is hard to fit, one might unevenly support the car such as with a jack in one corner, to "warp" the body and make the fit easier.

I have a W&N quote for a windshield and am pondering replacing mine. I think my dealer price is about $700 delivered, several years ago. W&N is much less even including shipping but I have to verify what recourse I have if the glass does not fit, arrives broken or distorted...not going to ship it back.
