Holy cow, this is what BMW is now charging for front and rear seals! They have superceded the part numbers too.

Windshields were over $650, don’t know what they are asking now and Don tells us they don’t fit, I bought a Walloth one.

Whas it the windshields that don't fit? or the windshield gaskets? I've heard some gaskets don't fit well.

@Gary Knox any chance this windshield rubber can be replaced with generic rubber (like you did with the door seal)?

Sorry, I have no idea. When I wanted to replace the door seal, I went to the Steele catalog and printed out some of the profiles I thought might work. Picked the one that was almost identical, bought 6 feet for a quite reasonable price and tried it. Wunderbar, it worked great.

This is unlikely as it's a complex shape that must perfectly fit both the window and the body opening as well as hold the window trim. In addition, the seal is a single closed ring of rubber and something generic would be a strip which would leave a seam to be joined. No matte what sealant was used, it would likely separate over time as the rubber aged and shrank leaving a gap for water to enter. This is not an area to cut costs. Even good gaskets shrink enough to allow water to enter over decades. This is why modern cars glue the windshield onto the window opening. In addition to removing the possibility of rubber shrinkage, It stiffens the body assembly but that means that intact removal of the window is almost impossible.

As Chris indicated (from my research on the site) BMW seals seem to be preferred. There are several options, but not sure of the quality of each:

https://shopware.bmw-oldtimerteile.de/ front windshield seal € 89.68 I did purchase one for my windshield removal and replacement, but am prepared to purshae a BMW seal if it doesn't work.

https://www.wallothnesch.com/en/seal-for-windscreen-51-19-02.html Excl. VAT €228.28
89 pounds - wow - keep us posted on the quality. When I bought my car it came with a new BMW front windshield seal, not sure if it is still good (could be dried out) if not I may try out the 89.68 one.

The BMW ETK still shows the old part number and lower price but it is not available. RealOEM prices are years out of date and have been for quite a while. Don advises not to use the Walloth seal.

The windshield gasket for a Ferrari 550 is $2,700. So it could be worse!
Glad these new expensive gaskets for BMW actually fit well.

i like the Walloth glass and seals
i won’t buy bmw glass
I have a box of other seals from Germany that I’m trying to return.
thats all I have to say.

Hmmm, my windshield is currently out. I am debating whether to put the original one back in after paint or bite the bullet and get a new one. I got new seals from Carl a while ago but even though the windshield is still intact, it is 48 year old and obviously, somewhat pitted...

Edit: Rabbit hole alert! If I get a new front, should I also get a rear so they match? And at that point, should I get a complete set??? Aaaaaaaargh!

What made you decide to get a new, Chris? EDIT: “ a new windshield”

I had my front glass replaced with a new seal and the bloody thing leaks on the bottom corners onto the dash. Unfortunately this was the next year driving season after install when I got caught in a rain storm and finally noticed the issue. Wish I had it done with a quality seal by a reputable glass shop now.

Mine were only 15 years old but I didn’t know if removing glass would require cutting and the top corners tend to tuck in a bit.

Removed my front windshield and the gasket was quite old and did not require cutting to remove. I bought gaskets and glass from W&N for the re-installation that hopefully is coming soon.
