I just got a quote from Safelite which , I believe, is a chain of windshield installation places across the US. They quoted me a price of $740 installed. I asked what it would cost outright, bearing in mind that they would now not have to travel 125 miles roundtrip to my place out in the desert, about 50 miles east of Death Valley, and not have to do the installation. That knocked the price down to $680. I questioned the quote, figuring that it would've easily saved them 3 hours of time plus gas, but they stood by the numbers and said they had one in stock. They then called to verify that, and reaffirmed that one was available. I ended up finding a used one for $125 and a used rear window with good electrical defroster so I picked up both of them, really not needing the rear. I hestitate installing the old glass because sometimes they seem brittle, and the edges do start to delaminate with bubbles, but really, we are all not going to have much of a choice in the near future.
