Any trick to removing the windshield wiper arms?

provided they are original, there is a small retaining clamp in the bottom of the barrel
try to use a thin screwdriver to free it and then pull
no brute force!

Bear in mind that the wipers cannot be remove in the down position. Flip wipers straight up and pull out. They should come out with relative ease, no tools should be needed.
