WTB: A New Daily Driver

Good find. But the early ones had REALLY short range. Especially by today's standards. It pays to get at least a 2019 or later with the 120Ah battery

day66 makes a good point. the E46 and E39 are old models now. When I ended my relationship with my E39Touring, it was because I had run it literally as a daily driver to over 200,000 miles. The regular occurrence of a dashboard light alerting me to another mystery to solve became so frequent, that I was working on it more often than my "hobby cars". And I loved that wagon. But age got the better of it, and I moved on. There have been some great suggestions above, and we are all curious to see what you decide upon. Good luck! Mike

I don't want to steer anyone away from an e39 or e46 touring, I love them - we've had 3 e39 wagons and one e46 wagon. But, as others have said, they are getting to be older cars now. Something else to consider, we came very close to buying a VW Golf Alltrack in 2018 but my wife decided on her Jeep. Great car, AWD, handled great, and you could actually get a manual transmission.

An E39 Touring makes a wonderful daily driver. There is a 5 speed manual on BAT right now.
In fact, that one is coming home. Sorry if this outcome is not as exciting as the 8 cylinder or M options. But I think I will make good use of this well cared for e39 long roof. Amy thinks I should just leave well enough alone, but I have some plans for the car. :)

Congrats!! Our first one was a 5 speed, amazing car! A sports car with a backpack. I regretted selling it before even signing it over to the new owner.

Smart choice, somewhat jealous....Congratulations!

Our second e39 touring was the exact color combo as this one, 1999 528it auto with sport package without sport seats. I can never leave well enough alone so I added a M5 front bumper, sport seats, and staggered parallel wheels. Man, it looked good. I gave it to our oldest daughter for her first car, the boys at her High School loved it but she couldn't have cared less. :)

On my possible list of work is an M5 bumper. I'd love to know what route you took. There are new aftermarket ones from M-Tech (and others). I've seen used as well, but you never know what it's been through. Likewise, perhaps M5 mirrors. Definitely wheels, and some suspension modification (possibly the KW coilover setup, or something similar).

I'm all ears. What would you do? I don't want to pimp it out too much. But it currently has it's fair share of dings and scratches, so it's not perfect. This is freeing, and also lets me feel like I am not erasing some magical level of originality from a time capsule.

I have some plans for the interior, too. Just some light adjustments, I think. We'll see - it's not even here yet.

I found that upgrading the front computer with a dynavin was well worth it. Looks stock but has Bluetooth, maps, CarPlay etc. Makes for a more enjoyable everyday ride

I got very lucky with the M5 bumper. Our wagon was Jet Black and the original bumper was a little beat up. I was on CL one day and a guy was parting a black e39 M5. I called him to ask what color black it was and he was like 'black', I told him where to look for the paint code and he came back and said 'jet black'. I think I paid $300 bucks for it. As I recall, very easy install.

Good catch, that is a premium upgrade.

Hi Stephen - I've owned two e39s and still have an e39 540i6 speed sedan that I have owned for 23 years. Some thoughts:

On wheels and tires, I like the Style 37s. Style 5s are nice and more elegant. That said, I have a set of Style 66s on my car right now. These are on my car because (1) I’m refinishing my HREs, and because (2) they have a set of lightly used Michelin Pilot Sport all season tires. If you might be interested in a set of Style 66s, I could accelerate my HRE project.

The first thing I would do on your car is replace the brake lines with stainless steel lines. Old spongy lines ruin the driving experience. And while you are at it, the 540 brakes are a nice upgrade for the 528. If you do this, you need the 540 carriers.

As to the M5 front fascia, I never did this. In looking at this, it appeared that the aftermarket parts did not fit very well, and OEM parts were very expensive. I still have the fascia on my car that you have on yours. That said, the M5 kidney grills are a nice upgrade. And you can install the M5 brake ducts for better front brake cooling (you need to cut one area of the fascia to do this). I’ve done both of these mods.

I highly recommend the Zionsville radiator and expansion tank replacement. I was involved in petitioning Zionsville to make these setups for the e39s twenty years ago. The plastic oem necks that the hoses attach to, and the plastic expansion tanks, were designed to meet BMW’s easily recyclable goals. Thus, they don’t last. And when they go, there is no limp home mode. You need a tow truck.

The cup holders suck. Get an Ultimate Cup Holder and install it on the passenger side. Then get the e38 black blanking plate and remove the cup holders altogether.

I like the 2001 headlights with angel eyes and yellow corners. If you go to the 2002 headlights, the corners are clear and you then need to change the rears. If you upgrade to the angel eyes, the Weisslicht angel eye lighting is a nice upgrade. Note the headlights come in both Xenon and non-Xenon versions. If you make this change, be sure to match what you already have in the car.

It appears you have the sport suspension based on the blackout trim. The sport suspension is quite good, but I’ve gone to H&R Springs with Bilstein Sport Shocks, Eibach Sway Bars, Poly Bushing and TC Kline Rear Brackets. With your car, you can upgrade to the e39 rear sway bar, which would be cheap and easy. The front won’t fit because its shaped differently due to the size of the M62 engine. You would need to go aftermarket.

I upgraded my dash to the Euro dash and the armrest to the Euro armrest. Not sure if these parts are still available. The US dash is 3” fatter than the Euro dash due to US crash testing for people not wearing seat belts. The Euro dash is much more elegant, but expensive. With the armrest, I didn’t like my elbow hitting the hard plastic center designed to hold the phone, so I changed to the Euro version without the phone tray.

Hope this helps.

One more thing. Lower control arms in the e39s do not last. BMW's CAD software was programmed for German roads, and on US roads the control arms take a beating. I would plan to replace the lower control arms right away. I know the e53 control arms are more robust and fit the 540. I believe they also fit the 528s, but you should check on this.
